As Detective 1st Grade Abigail Baker on the long-running CBS hit Blue Bloods, Abigail Hawk has been a beloved fixture in the lives of millions for over a decade. Appearing in more than 250 episodes alongside the iconic Tom Selleck, she’s built a career that many actors would envy. But now that the show has wrapped up, she’s reflecting on the bittersweet end of a character she grew so close to, the castmates who became her second family, and the incredible journey that changed her life forever.
Abigail Hawk opened up to Closer about her deep connection to her character, Detective Baker. “I just love that Baker was never afraid of her words or decisions,” she shared. “She was this amazing blend of fearlessness and respect. She knew exactly who she was, and she carried herself with such confidence. As women, we often struggle with recognizing our own value and worth, and Baker was a constant reminder of that. Honestly? I think I’ll probably deal with impostor syndrome for the rest of my life, but Baker taught me to lean into that confidence whenever I can.”
A Master Class in Acting
At 42 years old, Abigail Hawk calls her time on Blue Bloods “a master class in acting.” Not only did she get to work alongside an incredible lineup of guest stars, but she also had the privilege of collaborating closely with Tom Selleck, who played Police Commissioner Frank Reagan. “Tom is one of those actors who elevates everyone around him,” she says. “He has this incredible ability to make you feel seen and heard, and it’s something I’ve carried with me into every role since.”

When asked about the best advice Tom ever gave her, Abigail didn’t hesitate. “He told me always to have a secret,” she explained. “It’s such a simple concept, but it’s so powerful. When you give your character a secret, it adds layers to their personality that make them more intriguing. You don’t even need to share the secret with anyone—it’s just this little spark behind your eyes that the camera picks up on. It’s magic, really.”
Tom Selleck: A Thoughtful Friend and Mentor
Over the years, Abigail formed a close friendship with Tom, one she holds dear. “He’s such a private person, but also incredibly humble and authentic,” she reflects. “Tom’s thoughtfulness extends beyond just his acting—it’s how he approaches life. One of the things I admire most about him is how he consumes information. He reads from both sides of the political spectrum, left and right, before forming his opinions. He’s seen so much in his 79 years, and his wisdom comes from being well-traveled and open-minded. That’s something I’ve tried to emulate in my own life.”
Abigail fondly recalls their conversations about everything from social issues to politics. “Tom would break down complex topics with such clarity,” she says. “He wasn’t afraid to challenge his own beliefs, and he encouraged me to do the same. It’s not about being right or wrong—it’s about being informed and thoughtful.”

The End of an Era
For Abigail, saying goodbye to Blue Bloods wasn’t easy. “No one wanted this show to end,” she admits. “We were all so invested in these characters and this world. Unfortunately, it seems like this is the end of the road for these specific characters in this timeline. While there’s been talk about potential spinoffs or extensions, nothing concrete has been announced yet.”
Growing Up with the Show
Abigail Hawk’s life has evolved dramatically since she first joined Blue Bloods in 2010. “This show took up half of my adult life,” she reflects. “I started when I was 20 years old, and during its run, I became a parent, bought a house, and even purchased a second home in Maine. Now, I have an almost 13-year-old kid who reminds me daily of how quickly time flies. I remember being pregnant with him on set—it feels like just yesterday.”
Her final scene as Det. Baker was an emotional milestone. “It was hard to let go of someone I’d invested so much of myself into,” she says. “But I take comfort in knowing that Baker’s strength and confidence will stay with me. Whenever I find myself doubting, I can channel her energy and remind myself to keep moving forward. Life is all about putting one foot in front of the other, even when it feels overwhelming.”
