His breakout role came in the 1945 film Anchors Aweigh, which opened doors to blockbuster opportunities with MGM studios. Eventually, he secured a contract with the studio as a young adult. “It was grueling—six days a week, eight hours a day, with only three hours of schooling squeezed into the mix,” Dean recounted. “You’d have to fit in schoolwork in 15-minute chunks throughout the day. Imagine finishing a scene, heading to class for 15 minutes, and then rushing back for the next shot. It left little room for real learning, and I felt like I missed out on so much education because of it.”

Dean’s career had its ups and downs, but his resilience always shone through. After stepping away from acting for a while, he returned to Broadway in 1957 with Compulsion. Along the way, he married actress Millie Perkins from 1960 to 1962 and later found love again with Joy Marchenko, whom he wed in 1981. Together, they welcomed their son Austin in 1983 and daughter Sophia in 1985. The couple eventually divorced in 2004.
By the early '80s, Dean’s career was thriving. Roles in Paris, Texas and Dune reignited his Hollywood presence, and he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Married to the Mob in 1988.
