Richard Dawson’s first chapter as a father began during his marriage to the glamorous Diana Dors. Together, they welcomed their firstborn, Mark, in 1960, followed by Gary in 1962. Their marriage, which spanned from 1959 to 1966, was filled with highs and lows, but their bond as parents remained strong. During this time, Richard was already making waves as a beloved panelist on Match Game, while Diana pursued her career as a cabaret performer. Together, they built a foundation of love and support for their growing family.
Fast forward to 1981, and Richard Dawson’s life took a new turn when he met his second wife, Gretchen Johnson, while hosting the beloved game show Family Feud. After a decade of love and partnership, they tied the knot in 1991 and welcomed their daughter, Shannon, in 1990. Even as Richard continued to shine on screen well into his 60s, he never let his career overshadow his role as a loving father. Mark Dawson, the eldest son, followed in his parents’ footsteps by venturing into the entertainment industry. However, unlike his dad’s front-and-center approach, Mark preferred working behind the scenes as a producer and editorial assistant. Before Richard passed away in 2012 at the age of 79 after battling esophageal cancer, he imparted some timeless wisdom to his son.
“He told me, ‘Go through life unscathed,’” Mark recalled fondly. “What he meant was that life is fleeting. Enjoy every moment, find joy in the little things, and make the most of it. His advice has stayed with me ever since.”
Richard and Diana’s second child, Gary, also dipped his toes into acting, landing a single credit for his appearance in a 1984 episode of Down to Earth. Much like his older brother, Gary chose to work behind the scenes, contributing to several iconic shows, including Family Feud, Card Sharks, and Game Changers. Mark and Gary also had a half-brother, Jason, from their mom’s marriage to Alan Lake. Tragically, Jason passed away in September 2019 at the age of 50.

“There were no warning signs at first. He just thought he had heartburn, and then we found out it was stage four esophageal cancer,” Shannon revealed to Access Hollywood in June 2012.
