With just five months to go before he celebrates his 80th birthday, legendary musician Rod Stewart is reflecting on his incredible journey through life and music. In a candid interview with The U.S. Sun, Rod opened up about his thoughts on aging, his enduring career, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
Accepting Mortality with Grace
In a heartfelt conversation, Rod Stewart shared his thoughts on the inevitability of life’s end. "I’m aware my days are numbered, but I’ve got no fear," he said, his voice steady and calm. "We all have to pass on at some point, so we're all in the same boat." It’s a perspective that speaks to Rod's ability to embrace life fully, even as he approaches his golden years. For someone who's lived such a vibrant and storied life, it’s a testament to his resilience and optimism.
Continuing, Rod added, "I’m going to enjoy myself for these last few years as much as I can." He paused for a moment, then laughed heartily. "I say 'few'—probably another 15. I can do that easy, mate. Easy." His confidence and humor are infectious, reminding us all to live each day with purpose and joy.

A Career That Stands the Test of Time
Rod Stewart is no stranger to the spotlight, and while he's wrapping up the final performances of his 13-year residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, he admitted that things aren't quite the same as they were in his wilder days. "I’m not like I was in the '70s and '80s," he confessed. "Back then, I could stay up all night, get drunk, go mad, and still have a voice just like that. Nowadays, I have to protect my voice before and after every show."
Reflecting on the changes that come with age, Rod noted, "The older you get, the more you have to take care of yourself." Water, he emphasized, plays a crucial role in maintaining his vocal health. "But no, it’s not just water on my rider," he joked, adding a touch of levity to the conversation. It’s clear that Rod takes his craft seriously, but he’s also not afraid to have a little fun along the way.
Celebrating Milestones and Looking Forward
Rod's Hits residency is set to conclude on August 7 with his 200th show at the iconic Las Vegas venue. Despite the demands of performing night after night, Rod remains as passionate about his music as ever. "Before the show, I have a quick Bacardi, which I’m trying to convince myself is good for my voice," he admitted with a chuckle. "After the show, we all dive into the martinis. Most bands go home and go to bed, but not us. We throw a big old party!"
It’s this love for life and camaraderie that keeps Rod going, even as he approaches his 80th birthday. For someone who's spent decades entertaining millions, it’s inspiring to see how he continues to find joy in every moment.

When he’s not on stage, Rod cherishes the time he spends with his family, including his wife, Penny Lancaster, and their blended family of eight children and several grandchildren. Earlier this month, the family took a vacation together in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. Penny, 53, shared beautiful photos from their trip on Instagram, offering fans a glimpse into their private lives.
Overcoming Challenges and Finding Strength
Rod has faced numerous health challenges over the years, but he’s always approached them with courage and grace. In 2019, he revealed that he had secretly battled prostate cancer since 2016. "If you’re positive, and you work through it and you keep a smile on your face... I’ve worked for two years and I’ve just been happy, and the good Lord looked after me," Rod said during a fundraising event.

In the early 2000s, Rod was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which temporarily affected his ability to sing. "It was scary because I couldn’t sing a note," he told ITV’s Loose Women in 2021. "But fortunately, I had a particularly slow-growing thyroid cancer which was surgically removed, and now I have a clean bill of health." Rod’s experiences have taught him the importance of staying positive and keeping life in perspective, especially when faced with life-threatening situations.
