From New Zealand to Hollywood: Phil Keoghan's Journey

Phil's career didn’t start in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. It all began in New Zealand, where he was already making waves in the TV industry as a teenager. But it wasn’t just fame and fortune that shaped his path. A near-death experience during a diving expedition at age 19 became a turning point in his life. As Phil once told the Los Angeles Times, "I was 120 feet underwater, separated from my diving buddy, having a panic attack. I thought I was going to die. That moment was my wake-up call to live my life with purpose." Within a year, Phil and Louise sold their first New Zealand network show, Keoghan’s Heroes, and packed up for New York when he was just 23 years old.
Love at First Sight (and Work): How Phil and Louise Met
Love stories don’t always happen in romantic settings, and Phil and Louise’s story is proof of that. They met on the set of a New Zealand TV show called That’s Fairly Interesting. Unfortunately, the show didn’t last long, but their connection did. Despite the cancellation, the couple found love off-screen and have been inseparable ever since. Their partnership is one of mutual respect and shared passion for storytelling.

A Family Built on Adventure
Phil and Louise tied the knot in the early '90s and welcomed their daughter, Elle, in 1995. Their family life is as adventurous as their careers. The couple moved to California, where they founded their production company, Keoghan Film Company. Around the same time, Phil landed the hosting gig for The Amazing Race, which quickly became a hit on CBS. The show’s first three seasons drew nearly 10 million viewers for each premiere, catapulting Phil into the spotlight as a reality TV star in the U.S.
Collaboration Beyond 'The Amazing Race'
While The Amazing Race remains their flagship project, Phil and Louise have worked on several other ventures together. In 2004, they co-executive produced No Opportunity Wasted, a Discovery Channel series that Phil hosted. This show led to spin-offs in New Zealand and Canada, proving their ability to create content with global appeal. But perhaps one of their most ambitious projects came in 2016 with the documentary Le Ride. Discovering a book about the first English-speaking team to ride in the Tour de France inspired them to bring the story to life on the big screen.
Phil shared in a July 2018 interview, "My wife and I, my producing partner and I, stumbled upon this book about the first English-speaking team to compete in the Tour de France. As cycling fans, we couldn’t believe the story hadn’t been widely told. We thought it would make a great film, but we didn’t realize just how challenging it would be to bring it to life."
Expanding Horizons: 'Tough As Nails'
Fast forward to 2020, and Phil added another feather to his cap with Tough As Nails, a competition series on CBS. Alongside Louise, he serves as both host and executive producer. The show celebrates everyday workers who push their limits and prove that toughness comes in all forms. Season 3 aired in December 2021, just before the much-anticipated premiere of season 33 of The Amazing Race.
