Here’s the thing: Alan Alda isn’t about to let a Parkinson's diagnosis slow him down. In a candid and exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, the legendary actor reveals that he plans to keep doing what he loves because, honestly, life with the condition isn’t as bad as some might think.

Living Life to the Fullest at 84

“As long as I’m having fun and doing things that make a difference, I see no reason to slow down,” says the 84-year-old Alda in the latest issue of Closer Weekly, which is available now on newsstands. He goes on to explain, “In my head, I’m still a kid learning to do the best I can in whatever I do. That’s what makes life fun, so I’m going to do that as much as I can.”

Fighting Parkinson's with Sports and Positivity

To keep his condition in check, Alan has thrown himself into physical activities. “I box two or three times a week, play tennis, juggle, march, and do tai chi,” he shares. “It keeps me in good shape, and it’s a blast.”

  • Not only do these activities help manage his symptoms, but they also bring him immense joy and keep his mind off his medical condition. “It’s a common reaction to get depressed when you hear something like this, but it’s really not necessary,” he explains. “Parkinson’s can get really tough, but your life isn’t over. You don’t die from it—you die with it.”

A Bonus Day is a Good Day

Alan’s positive attitude stems from a near-death experience in Chile 15 years ago, when he suffered an intestinal blockage. “Waking up alive is a really nice thing,” he reflects. “That’s why I see every new day as a bonus.”

“I don’t know how much of a bonus I’ve got left,” says the six-time Golden Globe winner, “but I’m really looking forward to it.”
