When it comes to health and wellness, few names resonate as strongly as Dr. Mehmet Oz. The charismatic TV personality and heart surgeon has been sharing his knowledge with millions through the long-running Dr. Oz Show, which has garnered 10 Daytime Emmys over the years. But what really makes this 59-year-old father of four and grandfather of four tick? In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, Dr. Oz opens up about his proudest moments, his new System 20 plan, and the people who’ve shaped his life.
“If I had to pick what makes me happiest, it’s my family,” Dr. Oz tells Closer Weekly. “My kids especially—they’ve grown into such remarkable individuals. And beyond that, there’s an entire community of people whose lives I’ve touched. Whether they’re doctors, nurses, or producers who’ve worked with me at the hospital or on the show, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring a generation of healers and educators. That’s a legacy I’m deeply proud of.”

Dr. Oz’s latest venture, System 20, focuses on food, sleep, and exercise, but he’s quick to point out that it’s not his greatest achievement. Marrying his wife, Lisa, 56, almost 35 years ago, holds that title. “Marrying Lisa was the best decision I ever made,” he says with enthusiasm. “She’s been my rock, my partner, and my guiding star. I’ve never been happier.”

Dr. Oz, you recently had a lively debate with Mark Wahlberg about breakfast. Tell us more about that!
[Laughs] You know, breakfast is overrated in my book. Sure, it’s great if you enjoy it, but it’s not mandatory for health or to jumpstart your day. The real magic lies in intermittent fasting, which is a cornerstone of our System 20 plan. It enhances focus, aids weight loss, and even boosts overall well-being. Mark and I are planning a friendly competition at the gym to settle this. I’ll be fasting, while he’ll probably fuel up with a burger and beer. Either way, we’ll both know how to use a defibrillator by the end of it!
Marriage to Lisa: The Best Decision Ever
When it comes to career choices, Dr. Oz credits his wife, Lisa, for steering him in the right direction. “I never imagined myself in television. That was all Lisa,” he explains. “She was the Visine girl, so she understood media and knew its power. She encouraged me to step out of the hospital and start talking to people. We created a show for Discovery Health Channel, and from there, the rest is history. She had a vision for me that I couldn’t even imagine myself.”
