Paula and John met during their college days at Cedarville University in Ohio back in the '90s. They were young, in love, and full of dreams. Fast forward to the year 2000, and they tied the knot, ready to embark on life together. But life isn’t always a smooth ride, and the couple faced challenges early in their marriage. In fact, they separated briefly before having children. But here’s the thing—sometimes, your heart knows what’s right even when your head doesn’t.
In an interview with Good Housekeeping, Paula opened up about this tough period. “My husband and I were separated early on in our marriage before we had children. And we just didn’t feel right about it,” she revealed. “As much as I wanted to walk away and move on, I didn’t have peace about ending our marriage.”

Paula and John leaned on their faith and commitment to overcome their challenges. And guess what? Their hard work paid off. In September 2022, they celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary. Paula and John’s family grew with the arrival of their first child, Caroline, in 2007. Two years later, their son JJ joined the family, and in 2014, they welcomed their youngest son, Landon. These kids have brought so much joy into Paula and John’s lives, and it’s clear that family is at the heart of everything they do.
In 2018, Paula decided to step away from her roles on Good Morning America and The View to focus on a new opportunity at ABC and launch her own podcast, Faith & Calling. This move wasn’t just about career growth—it was about creating more time for her family. “I’m excited to get my life back,” she told People. “I have three kids, and working at GMA Weekend and The View has been awesome, but I’m so excited to not go to bed at 8:30 or 9 p.m. on a Friday or Saturday night because my alarm would go off for work at 3:30 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday morning.”
But it wasn’t just the grind of her demanding schedule that prompted her decision. A heartbreaking miscarriage also played a significant role in reshaping her priorities. “What kicked it off is that I had a really tough miscarriage,” Paula explained. “I feel like it was in that moment that really repositioned my priority compass and our family’s priority compass. I realized that my kids need me in the stands and on the sidelines, my husband and I need that time to reconnect.”
Through her podcast, Paula continues to share her experiences as a mother and the profound impact her children have had on her life. In a March 2023 interview with Baptist News Global, she reflected on the blessings of motherhood. “Children are such gifts,” she said. “My own children have opened my heart like never before. I’m not a terribly compassionate person, but motherhood has definitely made me more empathetic; it has changed me for the good.”
