So, here's the scoop: Savannah Guthrie wasn't at her usual spot on Today this past Wednesday, July 19, and fans were naturally curious about where she'd gone. But don’t worry, the show rolled on with a familiar face stepping in—none other than weekend host Willie Geist, who fans absolutely adore.
Savannah's Mysterious Absence Sparks Fan Curiosity
Now, Savannah, who just turned 51, didn’t give any explanation for her sudden disappearance from the show. The day before, she was all smiles as she interviewed none other than Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan. She even posed for photos with fans outside the NBC studio, looking fabulous in a white dress and black platform pumps. She seemed to be in great spirits as she waved goodbye to spectators after the show.
Willie Geist Saves the Day
But let's not forget, Willie Geist came through in a big way, stepping up to the plate and joining cohost Hoda Kotb at the news desk. Fans couldn’t be happier to see Willie back in action. One viewer even tweeted, “@TODAYshow with @WillieGeist alongside @hodakotb is fantastic television.” And another chimed in, “Always enjoy when @WillieGeist is on @TODAYshow.” It’s clear Willie has a special place in the hearts of Today fans.

This wasn't the first time Savannah's missed an episode of Today this month. On July 12, she was also absent and was replaced by Craig Melvin at the news desk. Hoda, who’s 58, mentioned that Savannah was “taking a day off mid-week” and needed “a little break.”
Savannah's International Adventure
Interestingly, that same week, Savannah was spotted at Bruce Springsteen’s concert in London’s Hyde Park. She was there with her husband, Mike Feldman, and was seen taking photos with some pretty cool celebrity friends, including Roger Federer and Jon Bon Jovi. During the outing, Savannah let loose and sported a trendy black crop top and jeans, showing off her edgy style while enjoying Bruce’s rock hits.
Anchor Substitutions: A Regular Occurrence
It’s not unusual for Today anchors to take days off and have their colleagues step in. Weekend anchors Kristen Welker and Peter Alexander have also filled in over the years when Savannah and Hoda have been on vacation.
Willie, who’s 48, recently celebrated a big milestone on TV—hosting his 300th celebrity interview on Sunday Today’s Sunday Sitdown segment. His 300th guest was none other than Matt Damon, who talked about everything from his family life to his role as Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer.
“It means the idea for a new kind of Today show has resonated with our audience,” Willie told E! News about his achievement this week. “It means our amazing team of talented bookers, producers, and editors has created something unique and compelling for our viewers.”
