Let me tell you, there are parts of filming HGTV’s Good Bones that Mina Starsiak Hawk is more than happy to leave behind. It’s been three months since the series finale, and the Indianapolis-based realtor has taken a moment to reflect on the challenges that came with working on the home improvement show.
Mina, now 39, hosted a Q&A session on her Instagram Stories on January 4, giving her fans an inside look at her life since the show wrapped up. “I miss Good Bones,” one fan wrote, which prompted Mina to open up in a way that was both heartfelt and honest.
“I miss it too, but only the best parts,” Mina admitted. “I miss the early days when everything was fresh and fun. What I don’t miss, though, is the pressure of having the entire weight of the show on my shoulders and my bank account. That’s a lot to carry, and I don’t like what my life was becoming under all that stress.”

Looking Forward After the Drama
After all the drama that unfolded on set, including strained relationships with her mom, Karen E. Laine, and her brother, Tad Starsiak, Mina remains hopeful about what the future holds. “But I hope there’s a new path forward that’s more sustainable,” she continued. “I love showcasing Indianapolis and putting it on a pedestal. It’s such an incredible place to live and raise a family, and I’m proud of that.”
That weight of carrying the show was something Mina had talked about before, especially as the sole owner of Two Chicks and a Hammer. Karen, who stepped back from the business in 2019, still remained a cast member on Good Bones.

The Business Side of Things
“I shoulder all the risk,” Mina said during an episode of her “Mina AF” podcast back in September 2023. “So, while my mom, Austin [Aynes], Tad, Cory [Miller], MJ [Coyle], and everyone else is having a blast and getting paid to be there, I’m the one who owns the company. A lot of people don’t realize or choose not to hear that fact, but it’s the truth.”
Changes in the Team Dynamic
The home design expert, who is raising her kids Jack and Charlotte with her husband Steve Hawk, explained how the dynamic shifted once she decided to scale back her team. “I want to tell them, ‘Do this, wear this, put your gloves on, put your mask back on. What are you doing? Why are you wearing dangly earrings during demolition? That seems risky,’” Mina remarked. “But here’s the thing: they’re not my employees anymore. Tad, Cory, and Austin don’t work for me outside of the show, so they don’t have to listen to me.”
