Hey there, friends. Kathy Bates recently shared that since losing an incredible 100 pounds, her work life has become so much easier. She described her new experience as "magnificent," and it's truly inspiring to hear how much her career and life have improved. This isn't just about looking good—it’s about feeling good and being able to do what you love with more energy and joy.
Reflecting on Her Journey
Kathy, who's now 76, sat down during a recent interview at the Paleyfest screening of Matlock on March 23. She opened up about her health journey and the positive changes she's noticed. For Kathy, this wasn't just about shedding pounds; it was about reclaiming her life and rediscovering her passion for acting. She's proving that it's never too late to make a change and live your best life.
The Struggles of the Past
Kathy recalled her time on Harry's Law in 2011, where she found herself struggling just to get through each day. "I had to sit down between every take, and it was awful," she confessed to People. Looking back, she admitted, "I’m ashamed that I put myself through that. Honestly, I didn’t realize how much my weight was affecting my daily life and work until I started making healthier choices."

Now, she's reaping the benefits of her hard work. "I can move, I can breathe, I can have fun, and I'm not sore anymore," she joyfully explained. "Sure, I get tired, but hey, I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore. But guess what? Even the younger folks get tired too!"
A New Lease on Life
For Kathy, the changes she's made have been nothing short of life-changing. As the Titanic star admitted, "I never thought I’d feel this way at my age, especially toward the end of my career. But here I am, feeling healthier and happier than ever before." It's a powerful reminder that no matter where you are in life, it’s never too late to start fresh.

Kathy's weight loss journey wasn't easy, but it was worth it. Over a span of seven years, she dropped an impressive 80 pounds through diet and exercise, and then lost an additional 20 pounds with the help of Ozempic, a diabetes medication that’s gaining popularity for weight loss.
The Turning Point
Being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes around 2017 was a wake-up call for Kathy. She realized she needed to make some serious changes. "It was hard work, especially during the pandemic," she admitted. "It's not easy to say no to food when you're used to indulging, but I knew I had to do it for my health."
Now, Kathy says she feels physically capable of tackling her role in Matlock. "I don’t have to sit down anymore. I can stand up all day, walk, move, and breathe—things I couldn’t do before," she proudly shared.
Achieving New Heights
Just weeks ago, Kathy celebrated another milestone when she won the Best Actress in a Drama Series at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards for her role as Madeline Matlock in the Matlock reboot. "There’s so much love on set every day," she gushed. "We’re surrounded by hundreds of years of experience—from the camera operators to the costumers. Walking onto that set feels like a miracle. I’m so grateful to everyone who makes it possible."

As Closer previously reported, Kathy's weight loss has given her a fresh start. "Kathy is healthier, happier, and ready to embrace a new chapter," an insider revealed in September 2024. "She’s even considering dating again after her divorce from Tony Campisi in 1997." While her rep clarified that Kathy isn’t retiring anytime soon, she is focusing on herself and her future. "She wants to meet someone nice and put some energy into finding Mr. Right," the source added.
