It’s not every day you see a reality TV duo step away from the cameras to tackle a personal family project. But that’s exactly what happened when HGTV's Good Bones stars Karen E. Laine and Tad Starsiak joined forces to help renovate the basement of Karen’s son, William Starsiak. While the drama surrounding the Good Bones cast has been making headlines, this collaboration shows that family ties can still bring people together, even amidst challenges.
On December 16, William shared a series of photos and videos on his Instagram account, capturing the moment when Karen, 61, and Tad, 30, rolled up their sleeves to pitch in with the demo work. It’s a touching reminder of how family bonds often go beyond the screen, especially when it comes to supporting each other through hands-on projects like this one.
Family Drama Takes a Backseat
Interestingly, Karen’s daughter Mina Starsiak Hawk, with whom she is currently not speaking, was absent from the project. The rift between Karen and Mina has been growing since the filming of season 8 wrapped earlier this year. Things took a turn for the worse after a heated argument on set during episode 1 of the new season. Mina, 39, has been vocal about the strained family dynamics, even alleging in a September 20 episode of her podcast Mina AF that Tad sent her some harsh messages via text.

Despite the tension, it’s worth noting that Mina and William have managed to mend their differences. In fact, just a month before Karen and Tad helped with the basement renovation, they were seen assisting William with yard work in another Instagram post. It’s a small but significant step toward healing within the family.

A Special Bond Forged Over Time
Karen may not be Tad’s biological mother, but she has embraced him as her own since the passing of his mom, Cheryl, when he was young. Alongside Mina and William, Tad shares the same father, Casey Starsiak. From her marriage to Casey, Karen is also the proud mom of son CR Starsiak. And in her second marriage, she welcomed daughter Kelsy Gray, making her a mom of four.
Over the years, Karen and Tad’s relationship has only grown stronger, as fans of Good Bones have witnessed firsthand. Tad has often spoken about the impact Karen has had on his life, particularly during difficult times. “When I was going through that rough time, every day I woke up and she was there for me,” Tad once shared, according to The Cinemaholic. “It’s great having her as a teacher and as another mom.”
Looking Ahead to New Beginnings
Karen was overjoyed to see Tad propose to Anna Spiars during the series finale of Good Bones on October 17. While Tad and Anna haven’t revealed their wedding plans to fans yet, Mina has expressed her belief that she won’t be on the guest list. During an episode of the Tea With Alice podcast on November 21, Mina joked about the situation, saying, “Right now, all he has done is tell me he is engaged and that I’m probably not invited to his wedding. Which is fine because I’m [almost] 39 and I’ve been to a lot of weddings. I don’t want to go to anymore.”
