Holland Taylor's Journey: A Life Dedicated To Acting And Advocacy

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor's Complete Relationship Timeline

Holland Taylor became a household name when she won her first Emmy at 56 in 1999 for her role in The Practice, humorously shouting “Overnight!” on stage. But make no mistake, her success was hard-earned and well-deserved. Since then, the now 77-year-old star has taken on countless hard-edged, funny roles in films like Legally Blonde and TV shows like Two and a Half Men, earning six more Emmy nominations. Now, she delivers a powerhouse performance as Texas Governor Ann Richards in Ann, the first play Holland has written, airing on PBS. “It is the accomplishment of my life,” Holland tells Closer. With her partner, Sarah Paulson, by her side, life’s never been better. “Follow your heart and your dream,” she advises. “Commit to it and make something happen for yourself!”

What Sparked Holland's Desire to Write 'Ann'?

"Ann Richards was a monumental figure in my life. Her passing in 2006 left me devastated, even though I only met her once. I admired her deeply—her life was a testament to making a difference for the greater good. I felt a personal mission to convey her inspiration, to uplift others, and to remind everyone that life can improve, that government can be a force for good, and that life is indeed positive, funny, and wonderful. It wasn’t just sadness—it was a calling to honor her legacy."

How Did Holland Create 'Ann'?

"I dove deep into research in 2007, immersing myself in every aspect of Ann Richards' life. After two-and-a-half years of study, I began crafting the play, which took about a year. The first performance was in Texas in 2010. From there, it expanded to larger theaters across America before making its way to NYC. It was a labor of love, and it continues to evolve."

"No work of art is ever truly complete, and 'Ann' is no exception. I plan to perform it one more time in Pasadena, California. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to, so I want to seize the opportunity while I still can. It’s a piece of my soul, and it will always hold a special place in my heart."

Discussing Holland's Iconic Roles in 'The Practice,' 'Legally Blonde,' and 'Two and a Half Men'

"Each role surprised me. I realized I have an innate ability to portray leadership, strength, and confidence. Characters like mine often declare, 'This is the way it’s going to be, and I don’t care what anyone says!' In real life, I might not exude that same confidence, but acting allows me to embody it. I wish I could be that person in real life, and perhaps that’s why I’ve become so skilled at portraying her."

Where Does Holland’s Confidence Come From?

"Performing as Ann Richards feels natural and empowering. But honestly, I don’t consider most of my work as accomplishments. I’ve done plenty of mediocre projects and acted as a 'gun for hire.' However, I’ve also been incredibly blessed along the way. Opportunities have fallen into place, almost as if guided by a force beyond me. It’s humbling and awe-inspiring."

    What New Projects Excite Holland?

"I’ve never been busier! I play The Great Leader in Bill & Ted Face the Music, appear in Hollywood, and starred in the sequel to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before [To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You], both on Netflix. There’s so much going on—it’s overwhelming and exhilarating!"

How Does Holland Describe This Phase of Her Career?

"It’s like being at the rodeo—horses everywhere, galloping in all directions. It’s chaotic, yet thrilling!"

    When Did Holland Begin Acting?

"I’m 77 now, and I started acting when I was 16. That’s six decades of passion and perseverance!"

"As a young teenager, I knew I was destined to be an actress. Our family didn’t have a TV until I was 12 or 13, but once we did, I was captivated by live performance shows like The United States Steel Hour. One night, I saw Jackie Gleason break his leg on camera—it was magic. I began mimicking performances at the breakfast table, and from that moment, acting became my life."

What Advice Would Holland Give Her Younger Self?

"I was indecisive and spent too much time second-guessing myself. I would tell my younger self, 'Slow down, calm down, and focus on what nourishes your soul. Commit to something meaningful, even if it’s just reading a book.'"

What Makes Holland's Relationship with Sarah Paulson So Special?

"Sarah and I are very different, and that’s part of our magic. Being older, I bring a sense of steadiness to our relationship. I don’t fret over the things that might concern her, and perhaps I provide a calming influence. She’s incredibly passionate and excitable, and I hope I’m the grounding force she needs. To me, she’s home."
