Sharon Lawrence is a testament to the power of versatility in Hollywood. After making waves as assistant DA Sylvia Costas on the iconic cop drama NYPD Blue, she seamlessly transitioned into comedy with her sitcom Fired Up. Juggling two demanding roles in the late '90s didn’t phase her, and at 58, Sharon remains unstoppable. She’s currently starring in Apple TV+'s Home Before Dark and the CW’s reboot of Dynasty, all while dedicating her time to the Cancer Support Community Los Angeles (CSCLA), a charity close to her heart.
“Life is about living in the moment,” Sharon shares with Closer. “A lesson I learned from my beloved aunt: embrace the now because it won’t last forever. Things change—whether it’s hard times or good ones. So, enjoy every second of it.” Sharon’s marriage to Dr. Tom Apostle, a kind-hearted physician, has been a constant source of joy for the past 18 years. “Tom’s Midwestern values resonate deeply with my Southern roots. It’s a match made in heaven,” she adds with a smile.

How’s Life Treating You, Sharon?
Life’s been treating me well, and I couldn’t be more grateful. But let’s be real, it’s not without its challenges. My parents live 3,000 miles away in North Carolina, and the distance feels even greater these days. Meanwhile, my husband, a dedicated doctor, and my best friend, an ER physician, are on the front lines, navigating some pretty tough situations. It’s a balancing act, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
What Draws You to CSCLA?
My connection to CSCLA runs deep. Both of my in-laws battled cancer, and my dear aunt triumphed over breast cancer. This organization, inspired by the late Gilda Radner, offers a lifeline to those navigating the complexities of cancer. It’s not just about medical support—it’s about creating a community where patients, relatives, and caregivers can find solace, understanding, and hope. The fear surrounding cancer can feel overwhelming, but CSCLA reminds us that we’re never alone in this fight.
What Was It Like Joining the Cast of NYPD Blue?
Back in 1993, I auditioned for Civil Wars, and that’s where the casting director spotted me. When it came time to cast NYPD Blue, they realized they needed more professional women in the mix. Originally, my character was written as a man, but they decided to switch things up. When I walked into the audition, I didn’t even have a name—just a script clearly tailored for a male character. Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) called me a "little bastard," and we all laughed about it later. Dennis and I had an undeniable chemistry, and the creators realized that seeing Andy through Sylvia’s eyes could humanize him in a way audiences hadn’t seen before. It was a game-changer.

How Did You Navigate the Show’s Groundbreaking Nudity?
Let’s just say it wasn’t something I expected when I signed on. I’ve never seen myself as the quintessential "beauty girl." My appeal has always been more quirky and fun. The scene in question was about intimacy and the awkwardness that comes with it. It wasn’t exploitative—it was vulnerable, real, and raw. The characters’ vulnerability was what made the moment so impactful. I’m incredibly proud of how it turned out and the conversation it sparked.
Do You Keep in Touch With Your NYPD Blue Co-Stars?
Life has a way of bringing people together, even if it’s for bittersweet reasons. We reunited for Steven Bochco’s memorial, which was a poignant moment. But beyond that, I stay in touch with Dennis Franz—Sip to me, of course—and Jimmy Smits. We’ve both appeared on How to Get Away With Murder, and Gail O’Grady and I crossed paths on the set of Criminal Minds. The bonds formed on set are truly special.
Where Does Your Sense of Humor Come From?
I owe that to my dad! He’s a natural performer, and his side of the family has a knack for good timing. Dad was a TV journalist by trade but always found time for community theater. Growing up around such creativity and humor has undoubtedly shaped who I am today. It’s a gift I treasure deeply.
