"There are some wild tales floating around, almost like bad movies. However, the most plausible story dates back to the 1700s. Two Scottish brothers named Manteeth immigrated to America. Unfortunately, they had a falling-out, and one decided to change his last name to Mantooth." It's a tale that adds an extra layer of intrigue to his already fascinating life story.

Growing up, Mantooth's life was anything but ordinary. "I was born in Sacramento, California, but my childhood was spent all over the United States," he recounts. "My dad served in the Army, and by the time I turned 16, we had lived in 22 different states." Long before he became a household name, Mantooth worked as a page at NBC, where he crossed paths with legendary figures like Johnny Carson. "I was Johnny's key page on The Tonight Show, but I messed up royally. In a moment of panic, I accidentally put Jack Benny in a closet. Jack turned to Johnny and quipped, 'I knew you hated me, but I didn't know you hated me this much.' My boss sent me home that day!" Despite the setback, Mantooth's determination never wavered.

Mantooth's big break came after a talent agent in New York saw him in the play Philadelphia, Here I Come, alongside Brad Davis. "After the performance, I walked into her office on Ash Wednesday and playfully remarked, 'Oh, you've got a little dirt on your forehead.' Little did I know, that moment would lead to a contract with Universal." It's these serendipitous moments that often change the course of a life.
The Making of Emergency!
When asked about filming the pilot for Emergency!, Mantooth shares some behind-the-scenes insights. "Jack Webb treated me quite harshly. He owned the show and directed the pilot, choosing Kevin Tighe as my co-star. While he convinced Bob Fuller and Julie London to join the cast, it was another producer who cast me." Despite the initial challenges, Mantooth found humor in the experience, even pulling a prank on Tighe that backfired spectacularly.
