Bob Harper is more than just a fitness guru—he's a beacon of hope and resilience. Back in 2017, just after stepping into the role of host for NBC’s iconic weight loss competition show The Biggest Loser, Bob suffered a life-altering heart attack. "It's been an emotional roller coaster," the 54-year-old shares candidly with Closer Weekly, in their latest issue now available on newsstands. But this isn't just a story of survival—it's a testament to thriving against all odds.

Bob's journey took a remarkable turn when he embraced his role as a heart attack survivor, using his platform to connect with others who have walked the same path. He's been actively involved with the national Survivors Have Heart tour, set to continue later this year. In addition to this advocacy work, Bob is back in the spotlight as the host of the rebooted The Biggest Loser on USA Network, premiering on January 28. And if that wasn't enough excitement, he's also planning a unique wedding celebration with his fiancé, Anton Gutierrez, the director of production for the fitness app NEOU. "Life has shifted for me in profound ways," Bob reflects. "Becoming an advocate for heart attack survivors has been transformative, and I genuinely feel stronger—both mentally and physically—with every passing day."

    So, Bob, how’s life treating you these days?

    I’m feeling absolutely incredible right now! I’m back in my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, meeting fellow survivors and caregivers. It’s something that’s become incredibly meaningful to me. Together with AstraZeneca, we’ve created this amazing space where survivors and their loved ones can come together, share stories, and support one another. It’s truly life-changing work.

    February 12 marks three years since your heart attack. How has this chapter been for you?

    It’s been nothing short of eye-opening. Watching the early footage from the Survivors Have Heart events, I’m overwhelmed with emotion. At the time, I was still so raw from my own experience, and I was there to guide others. But as time went on, I realized I was on the same journey as everyone else, emotionally and passionately. While maintaining physical health remains crucial, I’ve come to understand that the emotional battle is just as important—if not more so.

    In what ways have you personally evolved since the heart attack?

    After surviving such a traumatic event, you naturally want things to return to the way they were. But when you realize they might not, you find a new normal. For me, that includes building strong relationships with my healthcare providers. I see them regularly for checkups, ensuring I stay on top of everything. It’s all about creating a balanced and informed approach to life.

  • Has your fitness routine evolved as well?

    Absolutely, and in ways I never anticipated. My workouts are still intense, but they’ve shifted focus. Instead of pushing myself to extremes, I’ve embraced practices like hot yoga. These sessions are challenging, but they’re not the high-intensity, high-impact routines I used to thrive on. I’ve discovered a healthier balance, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

    What else has changed in your life post-heart attack?

    When I enter a new environment, my mind automatically scans for an automated external defibrillator (AED). I’m constantly assessing people around me, thinking, “Who knows CPR? Who would step up in an emergency?” That’s the kind of mindset I’ve adopted. It’s about being prepared and aware.

    Let’s talk about the reboot of The Biggest Loser. What’s new for viewers?

    As the host, I’ve introduced a support group for contestants to discuss their personal journeys. We’ve also brought in fresh trainers, a new medical team, and relocated to the enchanting Santa Fe, New Mexico. There’s something truly magical about the atmosphere there—it’s so peaceful and grounding. After filming, I returned to the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles and New York, and I couldn’t help but wonder, “Why is everyone so loud here?”

    Do any of these changes reflect your own experiences, like focusing on aftercare?

    Absolutely. We’re providing contestants with a gym membership and access to a nutritionist for an entire year. The truth is, losing weight is just the beginning; maintaining it is the real challenge. If you don’t incorporate these tools into your daily routine, you’ll struggle. And remember, there’s no finish line. This is a lifelong journey, but with the right mindset, you can succeed.
