There’s something magical about the way memories can transport us back to the most cherished moments of our lives. For Taryn Power Greendeer, her fondest recollection of her father, the legendary actor Tyrone Power, is filled with laughter, sunshine, and even the unmistakable scent of Coppertone suntan lotion. “I have this vivid memory of hanging onto his back in the swimming pool,” she reveals in this week’s issue of Closer magazine, now available on newsstands. “It wasn’t just about the fun; it was about the trust. I felt so safe in his arms, like nothing in the world could harm me.”

A Matinee Idol and a Devoted Father

Tyrone Power wasn’t just a Hollywood icon with charisma that lit up the screen during the 1930s and '40s; he was also a devoted father who made time for his family, no matter how busy his schedule. His eldest daughter, Romina Power, who penned the heartfelt memoir Searching for My Father, Tyrone Power, recalls how her dad always made it a point to come straight to the nursery when he returned home. “He wasn’t just a star on the big screen; he was our hero in real life,” Romina shares with Closer. “He had this way of making us feel like we were the most important people in the world to him.”

A Family Legacy

Tyrone Power’s second marriage to Linda Christian in 1949 brought two beautiful daughters into the world: Romina in 1951 and Taryn in 1953. While Tyrone showered his daughters with love and affection, there was a longing within him that remained unfulfilled. As the third generation in a family of renowned actors—his father, Tyrone Power Sr., was an esteemed English thespian—he hoped for a son to carry on the family name. “My mom often said that if I had been a boy, he wouldn’t have left,” Taryn reflects, referring to the acrimonious split between her parents in 1956. Two years later, Tyrone remarried Deborah Ann Minardos, who was expecting their son, Tyrone Power Jr., when tragedy struck. Tyrone passed away from a massive heart attack on the set of Solomon and Sheba at the young age of 44.

Though Tyrone’s life was tragically cut short, his legacy lives on through his children. All three of them—Romina, Taryn, and Tyrone Jr.—followed in their father’s footsteps to become actors. “The last chapter of my father’s life was incredibly unfortunate. He never got to meet or hold his son,” Taryn notes with a mix of sadness and gratitude. “But now we have a half-brother who we are incredibly close to, and that brings us so much joy.”
