In July 2024, Kathie Lee Gifford gave fans an inside look into her life after being hospitalized following an accident at her Nashville home. The beloved Today host, known for her vibrant energy and infectious laugh, shared her recovery process and the challenges of nursing her injury. It’s a story of resilience, self-reflection, and learning to slow down, even when it’s the last thing you want to do.
Knee Surgery and the Road to Recovery
Let me tell you, folks, life can throw you some curveballs when you least expect it. Kathie Lee Gifford recently revealed that she underwent knee replacement surgery in mid-July 2024. If you’ve ever gone through something like that, you know it’s no picnic. In fact, Kathie Lee told People magazine that the surgery was “one of the most painful situations of my entire life.” Ouch, right? And just when you think you’re making progress, life has other plans.
At the time, Kathie Lee was recovering while preparing for the release of her latest book, Herod and Mary: The True Story of the Tyrant King and the Mother of the Risen Savior. Talk about juggling responsibilities! But as anyone who knows Kathie Lee can attest, she’s not one to sit still for too long. Her doctors advised her to take it easy, but let’s face it—Kathie Lee isn’t exactly known for slowing down.

“I walked, I climbed, I walked,” Kathie Lee recounted to the outlet. “My doctor said, ‘Kathie, no. You have got to realize that this is serious.’” But let’s be honest—how often do we ignore advice when we’re feeling invincible? Kathie Lee admitted she was off her walker in just two days and off all her medications in three. “And then I did too much. I just did too much because that’s who I am,” she confessed.
She went on to describe how she started carrying books around, signing them, and getting ready for her book launch. Her grandchildren even came to visit, which made things even busier. “And you can’t. I’ve learned from this that you only can do so much. You’re just human. You’re just human,” Kathie Lee reflected. “And I’m so grateful for this lesson.”

The Hospital Stay: A Second Setback
Fast forward a few weeks later, and Kathie Lee found herself back in the hospital after a fall during her recovery. This time, she fractured her pelvis in two places, which required physical therapy to heal properly. It’s moments like these that remind us how fragile we can be, even when we feel strong.
Kathie Lee explained that she had been moving 300 books by herself while signing copies of her latest novel. “I weakened my body,” she admitted. “It’s my own fault.” The next day, while rushing to answer the door for her friends at her Nashville home, she lost her footing and tripped. “It didn’t take much, because I was weak in that spot,” she recalled. “And the next thing you know, I am back in the hospital with a fractured pelvis, the front and the back.”
She described the pain as even worse than what she experienced with her hip surgery. “The pelvis is unbelievably painful,” she said. “But here I am.” Despite the setback, Kathie Lee approached her situation with grace and gratitude, calling it a “humbling experience.”
Learning to Slow Down
While recovering from her injuries, Kathie Lee revealed her plans for spending her time. “It’s summer for everybody but me,” she joked. “But it’s OK. I’m going to get out to my little farm one of these days and stick my feet in my salt pool.”

For Kathie Lee, this unexpected pause in life serves as a reminder to slow down and enjoy the little things. “The Lord is telling me it’s time to slow down,” she reflected. “I’ve been running my whole life. The Lord is telling me, ‘You’ve planted a gazillion roses. Try smelling them.’”
