Tom Selleck’s Emotional Farewell to Donnie Wahlberg

As the curtains began to close on the long-running series 'Blue Bloods,' emotions ran high on set. Tom Selleck, the beloved star of the show, couldn't hold back his emotions as he watched his costar, Donnie Wahlberg, film a scene during his last day on set. It was a moment that resonated deeply with everyone involved, capturing the essence of the show's cherished legacy.

Donnie Wahlberg, now 55, took a moment to reflect on the series' final season during an appearance on the 'Today' show on Wednesday, October 16. He shared a poignant memory from his last day, recalling how he was filming a scene with Marisa Ramirez when he noticed Tom standing quietly in the wings, watching intently.

A Moment That Will Stay With Donnie Forever

Speaking candidly with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, Donnie revealed the profound impact that moment had on him. “He was there watching. I looked across the room and saw him standing there,” Donnie shared. “Tom is a really serious and focused man. He likes to cover up his emotions. He doesn’t like to show vulnerability.”

  • “When I looked across and saw him with tears in his eyes, it struck me deeply. That memory still brings up a lot for me,” Donnie continued. The sincerity in his voice conveyed the weight of the moment and the respect he held for Tom.

From Idolizing to Collaborating: A Full Circle Moment

For Donnie, growing up in Massachusetts, Tom Selleck was more than just a TV star; he was an idol. Watching Tom portray the lead in 'Magnum, P.I.' from 1980 to 1988, Donnie admired his craft and professionalism. Now, working alongside him and sharing the Reagan family dinners in 'Blue Bloods' episodes, Donnie felt as though he'd come full circle in his career.

“To suddenly now be working with this man and have him there to support me on my last day of work filled me with tremendous humility,” Donnie expressed. “It’s more gratitude than sadness. This experience has been nothing short of a dream come true.”

    Reflecting on a Decade-Long Journey

While much of the cast and crew, including Tom, have expressed their reluctance to see the show end after 14 seasons, Donnie has chosen to focus on the positives. “I don’t want to say I’m sad, because there are a lot of things to be really sad about in life. This was an amazing opportunity and a wonderful experience,” he said.

Donnie went on to emphasize the lifelong relationships he’s formed over the years. “I made so many amazing life-long relationships and had a wonderful 14 years with our cast and crew in this city. So I don’t want to say sad. It’s emotional, but it’s also deeply gratifying.”

Tom Selleck’s Frustration with the Show’s End

In a recent interview, Tom voiced his frustrations about the show coming to an end. “I’m kind of frustrated,” the Emmy winner told TV Insider on October 3. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for 'Blue Bloods' but about it still being wildly successful. In a Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 (in total viewers, we were No. 9 out of 100), if you discount the three football shows, we’re No. 6! I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn!’”

  • Despite his outward frustrations, Tom assured everyone that he won’t be holding any grudges. “I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe. My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go,” he explained.

The Final Chapter of 'Blue Bloods'

The second half of 'Blue Bloods' season 14 will premiere on Friday, October 18. As fans gear up to watch the final episodes, they’re reminded of the incredible journey the show has taken them on over the years. It’s a testament to the talent and dedication of its cast and crew.
