Let me tell you a story. Rebel Wilson, the hilarious and talented actress we all know and love from Pitch Perfect, recently shared how the legendary Robin Williams inspired her to explore more dramatic roles. In her upcoming memoir, Rebel Rising, she dives deep into her unforgettable encounter with Williams, a meeting that left a lasting impression on her and her career.
That Unforgettable Night in London
In her memoir, Wilson recounts her most cherished conversation with a male comedy icon—Robin Williams. “I had this incredible chat with the incomparable Robin Williams,” she writes. “It happened during the cold, wintry nights of London while filming Night at the Museum. Although meeting Mel Brooks in London was also unforgettable, this moment with Williams stood out.”
Wilson continues, “Robin took a moment to share with me something that would change the trajectory of my acting journey. He saw something in my performance that made him believe I could excel in drama as much as comedy. That’s a huge compliment coming from someone like him, a man who mastered both genres with grace and brilliance.”

Collaborating with a Legend
Wilson worked alongside Williams on Night at the Museum 3: Secret of the Tomb, a film released in December 2014, just five months after Williams tragically passed away. In a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wilson opened up about the profound impact their conversation had on her.
“I always admired Robin from afar, but I hesitated to approach him, wanting to respect his space. However, during a filming break, we ended up chatting for nearly 45 minutes. He told me something that I’ll never forget. ‘You should absolutely explore drama,’ he said. I was taken aback because I didn’t see it in myself, but he was so confident in my abilities.”
Wilson went on to embrace the challenge, starring in the drama The Almond and the Seahorse. “If Robin Williams thought I had it in me, then I figured I should at least give it a shot,” she shared, her voice filled with admiration for the late actor.

Remembering Robin Williams
On August 11, 2014, the world lost a true comedic genius when Robin Williams was found dead in his Paradise Cay, California, home. The autopsy revealed that his death was a suicide, and there was no evidence of alcohol or illegal drug involvement. Williams had been struggling with anxiety and depression after being misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Later, it was discovered that he suffered from diffuse Lewy body dementia, a degenerative brain disease that severely impacted his mental and physical health.
A Bittersweet Moment on Screen
As Night at the Museum 3 prepared for its release, Wilson recalled a deeply emotional scene featuring Williams’ character, Theodore Roosevelt. “There’s this scene where his character knows he won’t be around the next day, and he gives this heartfelt speech,” Wilson shared on Australian radio station KIIS FM in October 2014. “It was just me and my assistant Katie in the screening room, and we were both in tears. It was incredibly moving.”
