Let’s talk about the legendary John Malkovich. The acclaimed actor, who’s starring in Apple TV+'s new historical drama The New Look, shared a little secret with Closer about crafting unforgettable characters. “I’m not very clever, and that’s always been a huge help for me, you know?” he says with a laugh. “I mean, sure, there are people—heck, even in my family—who have deep thoughts, but that feels so dangerous to me. Honestly, I think that’s part of what makes me resilient.”

Diving into 'The New Look'

In The New Look, a gripping series inspired by the true stories of fashion legends Christian Dior and Coco Chanel during the harrowing years of Nazi-occupied France in World War II, John, 70, takes on the role of Lucien Lelong, Dior’s gentle mentor and boss. Lucien’s resilience is tested during this tumultuous period. “I knew about the Nazi occupation of France, but I didn’t know much about Lucien,” John admits. “This story is about the compromises we make in life to keep something alive, even when we’re surrounded by things we’d rather not be involved with. It’s a powerful narrative about survival and integrity.”

What Attracted John to 'The New Look'?

“To be honest, I didn’t know much about those dark years in the French fashion industry, although I was familiar with the work of the designers. I’m a fan of their creations, but I didn’t know the backstory. So, doing this series was an incredible learning experience for me,” John reveals.

“What made Lucien stand out was his knack for spotting talent. He had an eye for genius. Look at all the incredible designers who passed through the house of Lelong—Dior, obviously, but also Balmain, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Pierre Cardin. Many of those houses are still thriving today. Fashion is a tough world, and it often attracts sensitive, dreamy individuals. Lucien was a true nurturer of talent. He believed in Dior’s potential and did what he had to do to survive. That’s admirable, isn’t it?”

The Importance of Telling Difficult Stories

“You know, last summer I directed Leopoldstadt in Riga, Latvia. It’s Tom Stoppard’s remarkable play about the fate of several generations of Viennese Jews from 1899 to 1955. The level of barbarism in human history is unimaginable. There’s a part of humanity that’s hard to explain—we all have a little bit of barbarian in us. It’s something we should confront from time to time. The world would be a better place if we did,” John reflects.

    John's Journey in Fashion

“Yeah, I dabbled in fashion for years, creating 24 to 26 menswear collections. I love any form of human expression. The idea of being restricted or having that freedom taken away is unbearable. Even if it’s painful to watch or participate in, I believe all forms of expression have value,” John says with conviction.

    Returning to Broadway?

“I don’t know. I don’t feel a burning desire to go back. I might, but I can’t say I miss the grind of doing eight shows a week. It was a fantastic experience, but I don’t long for it,” John admits.

    Missing Live Audiences?

“I collaborate a lot with classical music projects, blending theater and opera. So, I still perform live frequently. And I’ve always directed and continue to do so. But I’m not a New Yorker, and we have a little granddaughter now. I don’t relish the idea of being away from her for six months. So, it’s unlikely I’ll return to Broadway anytime soon,” John explains.

    Acting Role Models

“Growing up, I admired everyone from Charles Laughton to Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, and Cary Grant—all the classic American stars. They shaped my understanding of acting and storytelling,” John reminisces.

Being John Malkovich is fascinating because of the incredible talents of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze. What’s special about that film is how it introduced these two unique voices to the world. They had amazing performances from John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener, and Charlie Sheen. Ironically, I’m not the lead in that movie. It’s weird to say a film titled Being John Malkovich has nothing to do with me, but it really doesn’t—except that I’m in it!” John chuckles.

    Was Playing 'John Malkovich' Strange?

“It was funny when Spike Jonze would tell me things like, ‘That’s not how John Malkovich would do it.’ And I’d think, ‘Oh, an expert! How would John Malkovich do it? Tell me!’ Because, truthfully, I wouldn’t know how I would do it. That’s why directors exist—to guide me,” John jokes.

    Singing Again?

“I had the privilege of recording three songs with the legendary Nile Rodgers, which was a dream come true. We recorded them for a film I finished in December called Opus. I hadn’t sung in 40 years. I used to have a decent voice, but that was before 4 billion cigarettes and 10 million bottles of red wine,” John quips.

    Reflecting on Life

“I wish I were younger, especially since we have a granddaughter who’s almost 2 years old. I wish I’d had more time with her, but life is what it is. Other than that, everything is great. I never imagined I’d have the life I’ve had. It’s been extraordinary,” John says with gratitude.

How Does John Want to Be Remembered?

“I don’t want to be remembered as some gloomy, existential figure. I just want to be remembered by my family and friends as someone who loved them. Life is about laughter and connection. I’ve had a beautiful life, met incredible people, and I cherish every moment. You’re remembered by the people who care about you, just as I remember those I care about,” John concludes with warmth.
