Opening Up About Communication and Challenges
Before tying the knot with Mika Brzezinski in 2018, Joe Scarborough shared some deep insights into their relationship dynamic and how they tackle the ups and downs together. In a candid conversation, Joe opened up about their communication style and the hurdles they’ve faced as a couple.
Joe, who is now 61, has been through the ropes of marriage before, having wed Melanie Hinton from 1986 to 1999, and later Susan Warren from 2001 to 2013. When rumors started swirling about a romance between him and Mika, the two Morning Joe cohosts confirmed their engagement in May 2017, surprising fans and colleagues alike.
A Look Back at Joe's Past Relationships
As the wedding bells approached, Joe admitted that he and Mika still had their fair share of disagreements. “We still fight a lot,” he confessed. But it wasn’t just the fights that mattered—it was how they handled them. Joe revealed that his approach to conflict in previous relationships wasn’t exactly healthy. “For me, the mistake always was—I’m very driven at work, but I go home and I don’t want to fight. I’d get passive-aggressive, you know, like, ‘Whatever you want to do,’” he told People in August 2017.

Reflecting on past mistakes, Joe realized this behavior had hurt his relationships. “Differences grow over a decade, and things ultimately blow up,” he said. With Mika, Joe learned a valuable lesson: “If there’s a problem, put it on the table immediately. If it gets ugly, it gets ugly. You go there and you fight through it.”
The Importance of Resolving Conflict
One of the silver linings in their relationship is the fact that most of their disagreements are resolved before heading to work each morning. “The blessing for us is, we always knew we had to take care of things by 6 a.m. the next morning,” Joe explained. “So we couldn’t go to sleep mad at each other, because Mika has the worst poker face in the history of television. She wears everything on her sleeve. I know if she goes on the air angry with me that everybody’s going to know.”
This mutual understanding helps keep their personal lives from spilling into their professional one, ensuring they present a united front on Morning Joe.

A Quiet Wedding Ceremony
Joe and Mika exchanged vows in a private ceremony held at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., in November 2018. “We wanted it to be really small and simple and not what you expected from Mika and Joe,” Mika told Vanity Fair. “Everything we do is exposed, and everything felt exposed every step of the way, so we wanted this to be private until it’s over. We wanted to recognize it more quietly and have the people who are most important to us around us.”
Blending Families
Joe, a father to Joey, Andrew, Kate, and Jack from his previous marriages, and Mika, a mother to daughters Carlie and Emilie from her marriage to Jim Hoffer (which lasted from 1993 to 2016), have successfully blended their families. In the years since their secret ceremony, the couple has continued to cohost Morning Joe with Willie Geist while sharing glimpses of their life at home on social media.
However, insiders have hinted that “the cracks in their relationship are becoming more apparent.” “Spending every waking moment together is just too much,” one source revealed. “Their on-air bickering has escalated into full-blown fighting.”
