Let me tell you a story about a man who's never been afraid to embrace new experiences, and that man is none other than William Shatner. To gear up for his role as host of the reality competition Stars on Mars, Bill took an unforgettable stroll across the red planet—well, virtually anyway. “They placed me inside these reality goggles, and I felt like I was walking on Mars!” he shared with Closer. “Every single direction I turned, I was surrounded by the stunning, otherworldly landscape captured by the Mars rover. It was like stepping into a completely alien universe, and I could spin around 360 degrees to take it all in.”
Shatner's Lifelong Pursuit of Adventure
In his remarkable 92 years of life, Shatner has never let himself shy away from the next great adventure. Beyond hosting Stars on Mars, he's the star of a new documentary called You Can Call Me Bill, which spans his storied career. And that's not all—Bill has a fresh album on the horizon, adding to the nearly dozen albums he's released since 1968. Plus, he's the face of the hit series The UnXplained, airing on both the History Channel and Netflix. “It might seem like I have some grand master plan, but the truth is, there’s no blueprint for all this,” he laughs. “Opportunities come my way, and if they spark my interest, I dive right in. If something feels right, you owe it to yourself to explore it fully.”
Shatner's Historic Spaceflight Adventure
Curiosity and courage led Bill to accept an invitation for a ride on Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin space shuttle back in October 2021. But even with over four decades of portraying a space explorer in the original Star Trek series and its film sequels, nothing could have prepared him for the profound emotional impact of actually venturing into outer space. “I looked out at the sheer tininess of our planet, floating in the vastness of the universe,” he recalls, writing about the experience in his 2022 memoir Go Boldly: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder. “The atmosphere that sustains us is thinner than a sheet of paper. My heart ached for the sacred elements that have taken 4.5 billion years to form on Earth, and I was deeply disturbed by the damage we’re inflicting on our home.”

Living in the Present: Shatner’s Passion for Horses
When he's not championing the future of our planet, Bill enjoys immersing himself in the present moment. His primary home is nestled near Lexington, Kentucky, where he dedicates his time to breeding horses. “It’s a completely different world, one where I’m known not as a Hollywood figure but as a horseman,” he explains. “People don’t recognize me as the guy from the screen. Here, I’m just another person who shares a deep love for horses.”
Though his life has been long and eventful, the four-times-married actor insists that he doesn’t dwell on the past. “We all make mistakes, and those moments tend to linger longer than they should,” he admits. “But time is chasing me, and I’d rather not waste it looking backward.”
Shatner’s Thrilling Experience on 'Stars on Mars'
That’s why Bill chooses to cherish the time he spends with his family, riding his beloved horses, or embarking on thrilling new adventures like Stars on Mars. The show simulated the harsh conditions of the red planet in Australia, offering a taste of what life on Mars might truly be like. “I was in Coober Pedy, deep in the Outback, over 500 miles away from civilization,” Bill reminisces. “Spending too much time outside wasn’t an option because the flies were relentless. But the entire experience felt so real, like I was truly on Mars. It was an adventure I’ll never forget.”
