Picture this: a random fan approaches two beloved actresses, Melissa Gilbert and Alison Arngrim, at a social gathering. The fan remarks, "It's so good to see you two getting along now," leaving Alison puzzled. It takes a moment for both Melissa and Alison to realize the fan is referring to their on-screen personas from the classic TV series Little House on the Prairie. In the show, their characters, Laura Ingalls and Nellie Oleson, were notorious rivals. However, in real life, Melissa and Alison have shared a deep and lasting friendship since their early days on set.

An Unlikely Bond

Despite their characters' constant bickering on-screen, Melissa and Alison formed an instant connection off-screen. "Alison and I clicked right away when we were kids," Melissa fondly recalls. "We've kept in touch ever since, texting each other regularly." Their bond has only strengthened over the years, with Melissa making multiple appearances on Alison's podcast, The Alison Arngrim Show. In turn, Alison has contributed to Melissa's lifestyle site, Modern Prairie, proving that their friendship extends far beyond their childhood days.

The First Meeting

Alison vividly remembers her first encounter with Melissa on the Little House set. "She was so tiny that I thought I could fit her in my purse," Alison jokes. "But then I realized she was this fierce little force with freckles, braids, and a big personality!" Their shared experiences as child actors from entertainment backgrounds quickly brought them together. "We started hanging out, having sleepovers, attending each other's birthday parties—it was like we were sisters," Alison reminisces.

Even now, fans of the show often express surprise when they see Melissa and Alison together. Alison recalls, "When we would go to the supermarket to grab snacks, people would recognize us and warn Melissa that I was in the store. They genuinely believed they were protecting her from me!" This reaction underscores how convincing their on-screen rivalry was, thanks to their incredible acting skills.

    Bringing the Drama to Life

Part of what made their on-screen clashes so believable was the effort they put into choreographing their own fight scenes. "We didn't rely on stunt doubles," Alison explains. "For the mud fights or any scene where we rolled around on the ground, they'd let us loose, and we'd go at it like cowboys in an old western. It looked brutal, but we always made sure no one got hurt." Their dedication to authenticity brought the characters to life in a way that captivated audiences for years.

    Playful Pranks

While Alison's character, Nellie, was often the instigator of trouble on-screen, it was Melissa who enjoyed playing pranks on her friends behind the scenes. During one memorable slumber party, Alison woke up to discover that Melissa and the other girls had filled her bed with rocks and pine cones. "I was so shocked that I threw everything at them," Alison laughs. "They were scared of me for days!" Other pranks included sneaking salt onto Alison's cake and adding radishes to her butterscotch pudding. Surprisingly, Alison found the radish-infused dessert to be quite tasty. "Radish butterscotch pudding wasn't half bad," she chuckles.

    A Lifelong Friendship

Though they now live in different parts of the country—Alison in Los Angeles and Melissa in upstate New York—their childhood friendship remains strong. "We're still a lot like we were back then," Alison says warmly. "We've grown older, but we still laugh at the same silly things. Melissa is truly a gem, and honestly, we haven't changed much at all." Their shared history on Little House on the Prairie continues to bind them together, proving that some friendships truly stand the test of time.
