Joni Mitchell's Love Story: A Journey Through Her Marriages And Relationships

Who Were Joni Mitchell’s Husbands? Details on the Grammy Winner’s Love

Let me tell you about the legendary Joni Mitchell, a woman who has shaped the world of folk and rock music with her incredible storytelling. Her songs weren’t just lyrics—they were pieces of her life, her experiences, and her heart. While she's no longer married today, she's had two significant husbands in her past. So, let’s dive into the story of Joni Mitchell's marriages and her current relationship status as we step into 2024.

Her First Walk Down the Aisle: The Story of Chuck Mitchell

Back in 1965, Joni Mitchell was just beginning to make waves in the music scene. It was in February of that year, at a folk club in Toronto, Canada, called Penny Farthing, where she met her first husband, Chuck Mitchell. His full name was Charles Scott Mitchell, and he was a folk singer from New York. Chuck was blown away by Joni’s performance that night. After the show, he approached her and suggested they could find steady gigs in American coffee houses. By April of the same year, the two had packed up and headed for the States, where they began performing together. Just a couple of months later, in June 1965, Joni and Chuck tied the knot.

Looking back on that time, Joni shared her thoughts in the American Masters profile, Joni Mitchell: A Woman of Heart and Mind. She said, “I was emotionally weak with a lot of things pulling me in all sorts of directions and this was a strong pull, and something of a solution. So we married, for all the wrong reasons. I made my dress and bridesmaid’s dresses. We had no money, I barely knew any of these people. I walked down the aisle brandishing my daisies thinking, ‘I can get out of this.’”

  • And get out of it, she did. By 1967, Joni and Chuck had parted ways. Instead of heading back to Canada, Joni set her sights on New York City, where she began focusing on her solo career, a decision that would change her life forever.

The Second Time Around: Larry Klein

Fast forward a few years, and Joni’s career was soaring. She had released several albums, ranging from folk music to rock, and was making waves in the industry. In 1981, her friend David Geffen signed her to his new label, Geffen Records. This period marked a new chapter for Joni as she worked on her pop album, Wild Things Run Fast. It was during this time that she met Larry Klein.

Larry Klein, a talented sound engineer and bass guitarist, soon became an important part of Joni’s life. His expertise in the music industry led him to co-produce Joni’s 1994 album, Turbulent Indigo, which was a major success. However, sometimes even the best collaborations come to an end. In the same year as the album's success, Joni and Larry parted ways, officially divorcing in 1994.

Beyond the Altar: Joni's Other Loves

While Joni only said "I do" twice in her lifetime, her list of romantic encounters reads like a who’s who of the music industry. The "Both Sides Now" singer has had relationships with some iconic figures, including Leonard Cohen, David Crosby from Crosby, Stills and Nash, guitarist Wayne Perkins, and songwriter J.D. Souther. Each of these relationships added another layer to her rich and storied life.
