Kevin Wade, the mastermind behind 'Blue Bloods,' sat down with TV Insider to explain why Frank didn’t find love during the series. “We didn’t discuss it much,” Wade admitted. “The bar would be pretty high to weave a compelling story about Frank Reagan as police commissioner while also involving a romantic subplot. We tried it a couple of times with some success, but it just wasn’t something we revisited often.”
Who Needs Romance When You’ve Got a Dream Team?
Wade went on to say that Frank’s professional relationships were more than enough to keep the story moving. “If this was a 1940s comedy with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy or Cary Grant, Detective Baker [played by Abigail Hawk] would be the ultimate Gal Friday,” he joked. But in reality, Frank was surrounded by a stellar team—Detective Baker, Lieutenant Sid Gormley, and DCPI Garrett Moore—who helped him navigate the toughest challenges of the job. Wade affectionately referred to them as the “Dream Team,” noting that while they might not have been perfect, they were a remarkable support system for Frank. “We didn’t give him a wife or girlfriend, but we gave him a blood family and a work family,” he explained.

Abigail Hawk, who played Detective Baker, shared her own experience of working alongside the legendary Tom Selleck. Now 42, Hawk recalled her initial apprehension about approaching Selleck on set. “I would go up to the production assistant and ask, ‘If I want to talk to him, can I approach him, or should I just keep my distance?’” she laughed. “Of course, Tom ended up coming to me and said, ‘Hey, let’s figure out some context for this.’ He just had a way of putting everyone at ease right away.”

Hawk revealed, “Tom would share his struggles with us as he wrote the book and showed us the pictures that were going in it. We got to see those images before anyone else did. Wade’s comments came after Selleck penned an alternate ending for his character. “I thought about it, but I didn’t really have input into where the show was going for the final episode,” Selleck explained. “In my alternate ending, Frank Reagan remains a man alone, someone who never wanted the job he had but has a hyperactive sense of responsibility. I think he’d be commissioner until he drops.”
