Macaulay Culkin's Almost-Deal on the 'Home Alone' House

But the magic of that iconic film never faded. Recently, Culkin revealed that he once had serious thoughts about buying the famous McCallister home in real life. However, as fate would have it, the deal never came together. Speaking at a screening of the beloved holiday classic at the Rosemont Theater in Illinois, Culkin opened up about why the plan didn't work out, over 30 years after the movie first premiered.
“I thought about buying it, just for the fun of it,” Culkin told the crowd, according to The New York Times. The house, which is located in Illinois, hit the market earlier this year with a price tag of $5.25 million. Culkin imagined turning the property into a "movie fun house" where fans could relive the magic of the original film. But life has taken a different turn for the former child star, who now has other priorities.

While Culkin was tempted by the idea of owning the legendary home, he admitted that his current responsibilities made the purchase impractical. "I got kids now, man," he explained. "I’m busy." The Golden Globe nominee, who is now 44, shares two children with actress Brenda Song. Being a father has brought new meaning to his life, and it seems that his focus has shifted away from real estate ventures and toward family matters.

During a December 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Culkin mentioned that his eldest son has already seen "Home Alone" and loves it. "I showed it to him last year, and he thinks it’s hilarious," Culkin said with a laugh. "I even convinced him that he’s the kid in the movie. I told him, ‘Remember when you had yellow hair? Remember when you were catching the bad guys?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah!’ Of course, none of that is true, but it’s fun to see his imagination at work."

Brenda Song, Culkin's partner and mother of his two children, was present at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony where Culkin received his star. She’s clearly a major influence in his life. "She’s the reason I do pretty much anything now," Culkin said during the event. "Before we had kids, life felt like a distant dream. Now, everything is real and meaningful. I love that my boys can come here and see someone’s dog pee on my name. It’s a small thing, but it’s special."
In his heartfelt speech at the Walk of Fame ceremony, Culkin took a moment to thank Brenda for her unwavering support. "Lastly, but certainly not least, I want to thank Brenda," he said. "You are absolutely everything to me. You’re my champion, the person who’s happier for me today than I am myself."
"Not only are you the best woman I’ve ever known, but you’re the best person I’ve ever met," Culkin continued. "You’ve given me purpose and family. After the birth of our two boys, you’ve become my three favorite people. I love you so much."
A Memorable Moment from the 'Home Alone' Set
Culkin also shared a funny anecdote from the set of "Home Alone," revealing that co-star Joe Pesci, who played Harry in the film, accidentally left him with a scar. "He was trying to scare me," Culkin recalled. "He wanted to be as menacing as possible to this kid."
During rehearsals for a scene, Pesci reportedly bit Culkin, leaving him with a lasting mark. "I saw his face, and I’ve never seen Joe Pesci actually scared before," Culkin said with a laugh. "He was like, ‘Oh no, I just bit a kid!’ It was a moment none of us will forget."
