When you think of Good Bones, you probably imagine jaw-dropping home renovations and heartwarming transformations. But behind the scenes, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Mina Starsiak Hawk and her co-star MJ Coyle spilled the tea about one of their biggest blowouts on the set of the show during an episode of Mina’s podcast, “Mina AF,” aired on Tuesday, October 24. Let’s dive into what went down and how they managed to smooth things over.
A Clash of Titans: The First Week of Employment
MJ recalled one of their most epic showdowns, which happened right off the bat. “Probably one of our biggest fights ever was literally my first week of employment,” MJ shared with podcast listeners. He went on to explain, “We both put our feet down and weren’t moving at all, which is typically what happens with you and me.” It’s clear that both Mina and MJ are strong-willed individuals who know what they want and aren’t afraid to stand their ground.
The Sanders House Saga
The tension reached its peak while the Good Bones team was working on a project they dubbed the “Sanders House.” This was no ordinary house—it was a massive property located on Indiana’s Sanders Street. Mina had her heart set on preserving the fireplace in the house, but MJ was having none of it. “I really, really wanted to save the fireplace in Sanders, and you were like, ‘Absolutely not, we’re getting rid of it,’” Mina revealed.

Adding to the stress, Mina was juggling her role as a mom to her newborn son, Jack, whom she welcomed in August 2018 with her husband, Steve Hawk. “I had just had a baby, and I’m there with tiny baby Jack, and everyone was angry,” she remembered. The pressure was on, and emotions were running high.
Reconciliation and Reflection
Despite the heated exchange, Mina and MJ managed to mend fences. “In that moment, I think [what] you and I learned the most about each other is that we’re both super stubborn and we’re both right at all times,” MJ reflected. They also acknowledged the influence of production, who were often in their ears, either instigating conflicts or pushing them toward agreements that aligned with the show’s vision.
Beyond the Screen: The Real Challenges of Good Bones
Working on Good Bones wasn’t all glitz and glamour. Mina opened up about the stress that came with the job, especially with the tight deadlines and the pressure from production. “Production was pulling the strings in their ivory tower when it came to my builds on the show,” she said. She explained that they were always “trying to get the reveal date they wanted” and “making the rooms the way that they wanted.”
The stress was palpable, with Mina describing an “unhealthy amount of chaos” on set. At times, production could be downright annoying, but it’s clear that both Mina and MJ poured their hearts into the show, despite the challenges.
A New Chapter: Moving Forward
Good Bones aired its series finale on October 17, with Mina and her mom, Karen E. Laine, overseeing renovations on Tad Starsiak’s new Indiana home. The finale also featured a sweet moment when Tad, a general contractor, got engaged to his partner, Anna Spiars. Away from the cameras, Mina and her family have faced some personal challenges, but she’s ready to focus on the future.
Mina is now gearing up for her spinoff show, which will debut on HGTV next year. “I am filming the lake house, and MJ is in there here and there; he comes and helps us demo, and I’m always throwing stuff against the wall to see what will stick,” she joked. If anything, Mina knows that MJ would be the perfect partner for any new project. “If any new show ever did stick, MJ would definitely be one of the people that I’d be like, ‘Hey, do you want to do this?’”
