Good Morning America’s Lara Spencer is showing off her new pair of boots, but they're not exactly the high heels we're used to seeing her rock. The beloved TV host recently underwent two separate procedures on both of her feet and is now on the road to recovery. If you’ve ever wondered how someone can look so put-together while dealing with a major medical issue, Lara is proving that grace and humor go a long way.
“If you notice I’m looking a little sleepy-eyed, it’s because I’m still adjusting to life in these new boots,” Lara joked in an Instagram post on December 11. “Let me tell you, I wish these were the cowboy boots of my dreams, but alas, they’re medical-grade walking boots. My right foot was an easier fix; I just had a plate removed from a surgery I had last year. But the left foot? Oh, that’s a story for the ages.”
At 55 years young, Lara shared a candid photo with her surgeon and another snapshot of her feet in the boots she mentioned. She explained that her left foot required more extensive work due to a diving injury she sustained back in college. “I was attempting a reverse one and a half dive when I hit the board and shattered my toes and joints,” she recalled. “Back then, they told me there wasn’t much they could do except tape it up, let it heal, and accept the pain. Fast forward to today, and thank goodness for advancements in medical technology.”

A New Chapter with Dr. Marty O'Malley
Luckily for Lara, she found herself in the capable hands of Dr. Marty O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). “Today, we have options that weren’t available years ago,” she said. “Dr. O’Malley and his team worked miracles on my left foot, and honestly, I couldn’t be more grateful. These boots may not be stylish, but they’re definitely made for walking—and hopefully soon, dancing!”
Her followers were quick to offer their support in the comments section. “Wow, Lara! You make wearing those boots look effortless, even though I know it’s anything but,” one fan wrote. Another chimed in, “I can’t believe how gracefully you handle all this. You always seem so composed, even with those heels you rock on air. Wishing you a speedy recovery!”

Previous Foot Surgery: A Familiar Journey
Longtime GMA fans might remember that Lara underwent foot surgery in January 2023, which also required her to wear a boot. At the time, she navigated the set on a scooter, proving she’s no stranger to adapting to temporary challenges. “I had a torn plantar plate and ligament in my foot that had been slowly worsening over time,” she wrote on Instagram. “I didn’t want to miss my daughter’s last soccer season or the holiday season, so here we are. Rolling into 2023 with style—or at least trying to!”
Despite the setback, Lara was back in the gym just weeks after her surgery, adjusting her fitness routine to accommodate her recovery. “I can’t put weight on my left leg for another five weeks if I’m lucky, and even then, I’ll still be wearing this boot for some time,” she explained in a caption accompanying a workout video. “But guess what? That doesn’t mean I can’t stay fit. I’m finding creative ways to keep moving, and I’m determined to come out stronger on the other side.”
