There’s something to be said for standing up for yourself, and Savannah Guthrie did just that when a Twitter user criticized her hair on the Today show. The comment read, “@SavannahGuthrie C’mon. With what they pay you, can’t you afford a hairstylist?” The tweet continued, “I love the natural unkempt look but it’s distracting on @NBCNews national news.” Oof, that’s a bold statement, right? But here's the thing: we're in the middle of a global pandemic, and life has changed for everyone, including Savannah.

And how did Savannah, 48, respond? With her usual poise and a touch of humor. She replied, “We are all doing our own hair and makeup during the pandemic. And yes, it shows!” That’s a perfect example of turning a negative into a positive and reminding everyone that we’re all in this together, even if we’re doing our own hair and makeup.

The Critic Tries to Clarify

The Twitter user who made the original comment didn’t want to come across as rude, so they tried to clarify their stance. “I didn’t mean to be mean. I worked in television for 32 years. I was just surprised that the makeup artists would let the hair slide on national TV for two days,” they explained. “You do look great. It’s the hair that needs a little love.” While their intentions may have been good, it still highlights the challenges everyone is facing in this new normal.

Life Behind the Scenes for Savannah Guthrie

Like many of her co-hosts, Savannah has been anchoring the Today show from her home in New York while occasionally appearing in the studio. And like the rest of us, she’s had to adapt to the changes brought on by the pandemic. Back in April, she shared a photo on Instagram of herself coloring her hair at home. “Let’s do this,” she captioned the post. “Coloring hair at home is easy with Charley on my arm and @ritahazan giving expert advice on FaceTime!!!” Talk about resourcefulness and a sense of humor!

In a candid interview with People, Savannah admitted that she’s just trying her best during these uncertain times. “I’m a little stuck in the ’80s and ’90s when it comes to fashion, but I just pour it on and hope for the best,” she joked. “I’m not that good at doing my hair and makeup, but I’m doing the best I can.” That’s a sentiment we can all relate to, right?

Life at Home with Family

Despite the challenges, Savannah has found joy in spending more time with her family. She told Entertainment Tonight in April, “We’re all getting a lot of time together, which is actually really great. But also, I feel like our kids really need us right now — whatever age they are — whether they seem like it or not.” With two young children, Vale, 5, and Charles, 3, Savannah is making the most of this unexpected time at home. “They know and they sense, even little ones like ours,” she added.
