There’s no denying it—The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has taken the world by storm, earning its place as one of the most beloved TV comedies of our time. But believe it or not, even some of the show’s own stars didn’t expect the level of adoration it received when it premiered back in 2017. Take Caroline Aaron, for example. She plays Shirley Maisel, the sharp-tongued mother-in-law of Midge, and has been part of the series from the very beginning. And let me tell you, her journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
Caroline Aaron’s Journey with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
When asked how she feels about her career right now, Caroline Aaron had plenty to say. Speaking exclusively to Closer Weekly at the Critics’ Choice Awards (presented by FIJI Water), she opened up about what it means to be part of such a groundbreaking series. “I’ve been lucky enough to do so many incredible things over the years,” she explained. “All of us on the show have done amazing work in our careers, but nothing compares to being part of this kind of hit. It’s truly unbelievable, surprising, and absolutely thrilling.”

Now, here’s the thing: Caroline didn’t exactly see this level of success coming. “I guess I shouldn’t give advice on gambling because clearly, I’m not very good at it,” she joked. “Don’t listen to me if you’re thinking about betting in Vegas. Seriously, don’t put your money down on my table.” But when it comes to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, there’s no denying its impact. “This show is so unique—it’s set in a specific world, during a specific time period. It’s New York in the ’50s, and it’s all about a Jewish family. It’s just so specific, and that’s part of why it resonates so deeply with audiences.”

The Show That Changed Everything
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the same genius behind Gilmore Girls. The series follows Miriam “Midge” Maisel, played brilliantly by Rachel Brosnahan, who seems to have the perfect life—a loving husband, two adorable kids, and a luxurious NYC apartment. But life takes an unexpected turn when Midge decides to pursue her dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. It’s a bold move that shakes up everything she knows, and it’s what makes the show so compelling.
Caroline and Kevin Pollak (who plays Moishe Maisel) portray the parents of Midge’s estranged husband, Joel (Michael Zegen). Meanwhile, Alex Borstein shines as Midge’s manager, Susie Myerson, and Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle bring depth to the show as Midge’s parents, Abraham “Abe” Weissman and Rose Weissman. With just three seasons under its belt—and more on the horizon—the show has already racked up countless Golden Globes, Emmys, and other prestigious awards.
