Kristen Bell Opens Up About Her Quarantine Homeschooling Struggles

Hey there, friends! Let’s talk about something we can all relate to these days: homeschooling. Kristen Bell, the beloved star of Veronica Mars and The Good Place, has been candid about her experiences trying to teach her daughters, Lincoln, 7, and Delta, 5, during quarantine. And let me tell you, she’s not holding back on the honesty—or the humor. Kristen shared her struggles, particularly with her youngest, Delta, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Why Kristen Bell Gave Up Teaching Delta Math

Now, we all know Kristen Bell as a powerhouse actress, but turns out, she’s also a very real mom navigating the challenges of homeschooling. During her chat with Ellen, Kristen joked about her decision to throw in the towel when it came to teaching her 5-year-old daughter math. She explained, “To be honest, I just threw in the towel.” The devoted mom, who shares her two daughters with husband Dax Shepard, revealed that things started spiraling downhill after she attempted to give Delta some math problems early in the quarantine.

Kristen recalled how Delta answered the first couple of math questions but then got sassier with every subsequent problem. “She wrote ‘No’ in the answer grid for the rest of the questions,” Kristen said with a laugh. “What’s four plus four? ‘No.’ What’s 10 minus one? ‘No.’ Three minus two? ‘No.’” It’s clear that Delta wasn’t having it, and Kristen decided to take the hint.

While Delta proved to be a tough nut to crack, Kristen admitted that things have been smoother with her older daughter, Lincoln. The Good Place star even shared a heartwarming story about a sweet note she received from Lincoln earlier in May.

At that time, Kristen, who married Dax Shepard in 2013, posted a super-cute picture of a note that read, “You are a great home teacher,” which Lincoln had written for her. “Last night I found this message next to my bed, left by my 7-year-old,” Kristen captioned the snap on Instagram, clearly touched by her daughter’s thoughtful gesture.

On The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Kristen explained the reasoning behind the note. “At her school, they have social emotional learning classes, and in those classes, they talk a lot about bucket fillers,” she said. “Bucket fillers are sweet acts of service. She’s in first grade, and they talk a lot about how to fill someone’s bucket and get some intrinsic value.”

Keeping Things Fun for the Whole Family

When they’re not focusing on schoolwork, Kristen and Dax are making sure to keep Lincoln and Delta entertained in fun and creative ways. “We’re doing just art projects around the house. We have neon glow paint, and we’ve been painting the rocks outside so they glow … and just doing silly stuff,” she shared with ET in early April. “Just reconnecting with each other — I think that’s the most valuable lesson.”

Hang in there, Kristen! You’re not alone in this journey, and we’re all rooting for you!
