Kyle MacLachlan: The All-American Actor With A Heart Of Gold

'Twin Peaks' Star Kyle MacLachlan on Marriage and 'Kindness' | Closer

Off the screen, Kyle MacLachlan is as down-to-earth and wholesome as the cherry pie his iconic FBI character loved on the legendary Twin Peaks. “I’ve always believed in living by the golden rule — treat others the way you’d like to be treated, and always lead with kindness,” Kyle, now 61, shares in the latest issue of Closer, currently available on newsstands. His approach to life is as genuine as they come.

This Hollywood anomaly isn’t your typical celebrity. Kyle has been happily married to TV producer Desiree Gruber, 53, for 18 years and is a devoted father to their son, Callum, 12. “Desiree and I share the same core values. We’ve always been confident in who we are, but let’s be honest, we were both nerds growing up,” he says with a chuckle. His charm is as real as his dedication to family.

A Career Built on Character

Throughout his illustrious career, Kyle has taken on some truly memorable roles, from his breakout performances in Dune and Blue Velvet to his unforgettable portrayal of Agent Cooper in Twin Peaks. He also charmed audiences on Sex and the City and delivered a compelling performance in his latest film, Tesla, where he plays Thomas Edison. While his characters often reflect the values instilled in him during his upbringing in Yakima, Washington, they’ve also earned him significant acclaim, including a Golden Globe in 1991 for Twin Peaks. “Sometimes, there’s strength in not trying to be the cool kid,” Kyle reflects.

What’s life been like for you lately, Kyle?

“We’ve been on an incredible journey exploring America’s national parks. We’ve visited 10 so far, and it’s been an unforgettable experience for our family. With travel restrictions in place, we’ve embraced this opportunity to see more of our own country. It’s been a silver lining during these challenging times. Honestly, it’s been great that my wife and I still get along after all this time together! Who would’ve thought?” Kyle laughs.

Back to the Weird and Wonderful World of Twin Peaks

What was it like revisiting Twin Peaks in 2017?

“No one ever imagined we’d bring Twin Peaks back to life. It all started with the fans who remembered Laura Palmer saying, ‘I’ll see you in 25 years.’ Returning to the show was fascinating, especially because I had to tackle multiple versions of my character. It was a creative challenge, but one that I embraced wholeheartedly.”

From Unknown Actor to Hollywood Star

How did David Lynch discover you for Dune?

“It was a whirlwind experience! I was performing in a play in Seattle, earning just $185 a week, and preparing to move to New York for repertory theater. Then, a casting agent approached me, looking for an unknown actor to play the lead role. They flew me to L.A., where I had no idea what a screen test even was. But I’d read Frank Herbert’s book obsessively since I was 15, so I practically had it memorized. At 23, I was playing a character I’d always dreamed of embodying. It was surreal.”

What was it like being part of hits like Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives?

“It was an absolute joy. Both shows were filled with incredibly talented writers and actresses. Working with Marcia Cross on Desperate Housewives was especially rewarding. We both come from theater backgrounds — she graduated from Juilliard, and I studied at the University of Washington. When the acting gets intense and you’re collaborating with someone who truly understands the craft, it’s a magical experience.”

The Infamous Showgirls: Regrets or Lessons Learned?

Do you have any regrets about Showgirls, the NC-17 film that became a cult classic?

“[Laughs] Sure, there might be a few regrets, but life is all about balance. That film has certainly entertained a lot of people, even if it wasn’t exactly what we envisioned at the time. If it brings joy to others, why not embrace it?”

    Wine, Family, and Legacy

We heard you’ve got a wine label. Tell us about it!

“I created a brand called Pursued by Bear, and we produce wine in Walla Walla, Washington. It’s a way to stay connected to my roots and honor my late father. I started this project in 2005, and for six wonderful years, we spent time together creating something meaningful. It’s a beautiful way to keep his memory alive.”

Bringing History to Life in Tesla

What inspired you to take on the role of Thomas Edison in Tesla?

“Edison is a fascinating figure whose influence is still felt today. Director Michael Almereyda had been dreaming of making a film about Nikola Tesla for years, and it seems like Ethan Hawke and I were just waiting to grow old enough for these roles! [Laughs] We worked together on Hamlet back in 2000, so it was a natural fit.”

    Love, Marriage, and Fatherhood

    When did you meet Desiree?

“We met in April 1999 at a chiropractor’s office in L.A. I had injured my back and was going through traction therapy. We chatted briefly, but I was too shy to ask for her number. That evening, fate brought us together again at the Talk magazine launch party. The universe seemed to be pushing us toward each other, and I’m glad I listened.”

What’s the secret to your enduring marriage?

“Patience and mutual respect are key. Desiree is incredibly patient, smarter than me, and incredibly wise. She keeps me grounded and makes our relationship work.”

    How has fatherhood changed you?

“Becoming a dad opened my heart in ways I never imagined. The love I feel for my son, Callum, is overwhelming. It’s a bond that’s deeper than anything I ever thought possible.”

Life Lessons from a Hollywood Icon

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned along the way?

“Try to understand where others are coming from. Until you walk in someone else’s shoes, you can’t fully grasp their experiences. It’s important not to judge too quickly. These are principles I try to live by every day.”
