Even though Whoopi Goldberg often shares personal details about her life on 'The View,' there's one topic she seems reluctant to discuss—her late friend Elizabeth Taylor's love life. Elizabeth Taylor, a Hollywood legend, passed away on March 23, 2011, at the age of 79. She and Whoopi, now 68, shared a close bond that spanned many years. However, when Whoopi was recently asked about Taylor's romantic history on the show, she decided to keep things under wraps.
Whoopi Plays It Cool When Asked About Taylor's Love Life
During an episode of 'The View' on Monday, September 16, the co-hosts were discussing Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, who were recently spotted together after Lopez's divorce filing. The conversation shifted to the idea of true love when Sunny Hostin remarked that she "thought true love was dead." The panel debated whether Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, might reconcile, reflecting on Hollywood's history of couples breaking up and reuniting.
Whoopi's Close Bond with Elizabeth Taylor
When Ana Navarro, 52, turned to Whoopi to inquire about Taylor's tumultuous marriages to Richard Burton, the mood shifted. Burton and Taylor were married twice—from 1964 to 1974, and again from 1975 to 1976. Ana asked, "You were very good friends with Elizabeth Taylor, right? She and Richard Burton got married and divorced twice. Did she ever get over Richard Burton? Wasn't that flame always kind of lit until he died?"

Sara Haines, 46, joined in, curious about Taylor's relationship with Burton and whether Taylor ever confided in Whoopi about her love life. "Did she share it with you?" Sara asked. Whoopi's response was simple yet telling: "Yes, she did. But I'm not going to share it with you." Her candid reply earned laughter from the audience, with Alyssa Farah Griffin chiming in, "In what world would Whoopi tell us?"
Whoopi Reflects on Her Friendship with Elizabeth Taylor
After Taylor's passing, Whoopi opened up about their friendship on 'The View,' revealing how much Taylor meant to her. "She was a big part of my life," Whoopi recalled. "It was because of her that I learned about collecting things. This is day one when we met. She said to me, 'Careers go up and down, so you need to get them [movie executives] to get you a present.'" Taylor's advice didn't stop there. "She said, 'I know Sandy [Whoopi's manager], I'll help you work this out,' because you must always know, when your career dwindles, you can look around and see the things that you got that your agent didn’t commission, that just is yours, so you can see your career, like mementos," Whoopi added.
Whoopi described Taylor as a mentor and admired her humor. "She was just a magnificent woman," Whoopi said. "She was a great broad and a good friend and she said things in good times and in bad. She was just great."
Whoopi's Reflections on Taylor's Advice
In an April 2021 interview with Variety, Whoopi reminisced about Taylor's advice regarding her acting career. "You and I know you can do anything, but you are Black, so it’s going to be harder for folks to believe," Whoopi recalled. "It’s going to be up and down. If you have a way to see where you were, it will allow you to not give up in tough times." Whoopi took Taylor's advice to heart, choosing art as her "present" in each project she worked on. "I was able to look and see that piece of art and think, 'OK, you’re going to carry me through now,'" she said.
