Charlize Theron’s Powerful Journey to Motherhood
When Charlize Theron thought about becoming a mom, she envisioned a life-changing experience, one that would empower her in ways she couldn’t have imagined. The star of Mad Max: Fury Road recently opened up about her decision to adopt and how her two children, Jackson and August, have completely transformed her life. In a candid conversation on the “InCharge with DVF” podcast hosted by Diane von Furstenberg, Charlize shared her thoughts on motherhood and the profound impact her kids have had on her.
For Charlize, choosing to become a mom was a powerful moment of self-determination. "The fact that I got to choose when I wanted to be a mom... there’s something incredibly empowering about that," the 44-year-old actress said. "Deciding to become a mother was a choice I made with intention, and it felt incredibly empowering for me as a woman. It wasn’t something that just happened; it was a decision I made with thoughtfulness and purpose."

Building a Family Through Adoption
Charlize’s journey to motherhood began in March 2012 when she adopted her eldest child, Jackson, who is now 8 years old. Three years later, in 2015, she expanded her family by adopting August, who is now 5. Since welcoming her children into her life, Charlize has found herself re-examining the world around her in ways she never expected.

"My children have really opened my eyes to the world in ways I never imagined," Charlize explained. "It’s like I’m back in school, learning something new every single day. They challenge me in ways that are both exciting and humbling. It’s a constant journey of growth and discovery."
The Unexpected Path to Motherhood
Charlize admits that her path to motherhood wasn’t what she had originally envisioned. "My kids came into my life in a way I didn’t expect," she said. "I never imagined I’d be the mom of two African American children, especially when one of them, Jackson, identifies as transgender. It’s been a journey of learning and adapting, and it’s made me more aware of how much I still have to learn."
As an Academy Award-winning actress, Charlize has faced her share of challenges as a parent. "There are moments when I doubt myself, but I’ve always known deep down that I was meant to be a mom," she confessed. "Even as a child, I dreamed of adopting kids. I remember writing a letter to my mom when I was 8, asking if we could adopt a brother or sister for Christmas."
