For years, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb have lit up our screens with their charisma and charm. But let’s be real, many of us have wondered if these two dynamic cohosts are just as close off-screen as they appear to be on-screen. In February 2023, both Savannah and Hoda were absent from the Today show due to personal matters, sparking even more curiosity about their friendship. So, are they as tight-knit as it seems? Let’s dive in and get the scoop on their behind-the-scenes bond. Keep scrolling to uncover the truth about their friendship.
The Inside Scoop: Are Savannah and Hoda Truly Friends?
Here’s the deal: Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb have been part of the Today family for over a decade. However, they didn’t officially become coanchors until January 2018, marking a historic moment as the first all-female duo to take the reins. That day, Savannah couldn’t have been more thrilled to welcome Hoda to the anchor desk.
“Today, it’s 2018, and we’re kicking off the year in the best way possible,” Savannah announced with excitement. “Hoda is now the coanchor of Today! Let’s give her a round of applause. This has to be one of the most popular decisions NBC News has ever made, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Hoda was equally thrilled about the new chapter in their journey. “I’m pinching myself,” she confessed. “This is such a dream come true. I think we should send medics to my mom—she probably fainted after hearing the opening of that show!”
But it’s not all sunshine and roses. In August 2022, rumors started swirling about a supposed feud between the two cohosts. Fans were left scratching their heads, but both Savannah and Hoda were quick to squash those rumors.
“We don’t have a feud,” Savannah reassured fans during an interview at BravoCon in October 2022. “It’s ridiculous, honestly. What can you do? These things happen, but it’s all nonsense.”
Hoda echoed the same sentiment. “You know, it’s funny how these rumors get started,” she joked. “Sometimes, it’s all about selling magazines. Don’t fall for it! We’re good, and we’re here for each other.”
Why Were Savannah and Hoda Missing From ‘Today’?
In February 2023, both Savannah and Hoda were absent from the Today show, leaving fans wondering what was going on. On February 17, Hoda made her last appearance before taking a two-week hiatus. Then, on February 28, Savannah stepped away after testing positive for COVID-19.
“Savannah and Hoda are both off the show right now,” cohost Craig Melvin explained during a March 1 episode. “Savannah is at home recovering after testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday. We’re wishing her a speedy recovery. As for Hoda, we know a lot of you have been asking about her. Hoda is doing okay, but she’s dealing with a family health matter. We’re looking forward to having both of them back at the desk very soon.”

Savannah and Hoda returned to the show on March 6, and Hoda revealed that she had taken time off because her youngest daughter, Hope, whom she shares with her ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman, was in the ICU. Thankfully, Hope is now recovering at home.
“You know what I realized, Savannah? When your child is sick, you realize just how much gratitude you have for the people who support you,” Hoda shared emotionally. “I’m so grateful to the doctors and nurses at Weill Cornell who were amazing. And I’m grateful for my family and friends, especially you, Savannah, who were there for me every single day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you.”
Their bond is truly special, and even guest Jamie Lee Curtis noticed the sisterhood between them. “It’s beautiful to see women supporting each other like this,” Jamie Lee said during a virtual appearance on March 8. “Both of you have been through so much recently, and it’s inspiring to see how strong you are together.”
