It all began when Ali MacGraw, the iconic star of Goodbye, Columbus, tied the knot with film producer Robert Evans in 1969. Their union quickly blossomed into parenthood when Josh was born in 1971. However, life had other plans for the couple, and they parted ways in 1972. Not long after, Ali found love again with Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, marrying him in 1973. This connection sparked on the set of The Getaway.
Together, Ali and Steve moved to Malibu, California, creating a blended family with Josh and Steve's son from a previous relationship, Chad McQueen. During this time, Ali made a conscious decision to step away from the spotlight to focus on raising her child.

"Steve was the biggest movie star in the world, and he didn’t want me to work," Ali recalled. "So I essentially quit making movies and took care of my child. It was a choice I made with love, and I don’t regret it for a second."
Josh Evans: From Acting to Directing
After Ali and Steve parted ways in 1978, she returned to the world of acting. Josh, inspired by his mother's legacy, eventually followed in her footsteps, though a career in Hollywood wasn’t always his dream.
"I think the first job I ever wanted to do was not in the film business," Josh revealed in a March 2016 interview with Crypticrock.com. "I wasn’t one of those kids who dreamed of becoming an actor. It just sort of happened. I knew I wanted to be involved in film, but I never imagined it would lead to this incredible journey. You wake up one day and realize how far you've come, and it’s truly humbling."
Josh made his film debut in 1989’s Dream a Little Dream, but his career soon took off with roles in major films like Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, and The Price of Air. However, it wasn’t long before he discovered his true passion lay behind the camera.
"I’m definitely more comfortable on the side of the camera that doesn’t put me in front of it," Josh explained. "If an interesting opportunity comes my way, I wouldn’t turn it down. But I believe there are others out there who are more qualified and passionate about acting than I am. Directing, on the other hand, is something I’d do for free. It’s where my heart truly lies."
Josh’s Family Life: A Legacy Continues
In 2003, Josh married his first wife, Charis Michelsen, but their marriage ended in 2012. Later that same year, he found love again with Roxy Saint, and the couple welcomed a son, Jackson. This joyous addition to the family made Ali and Robert proud grandparents.
