In a deeply personal and moving moment on "The View," Sunny Hostin shared her emotional experience of losing a close family member. The segment, dedicated to raising awareness about heart health, took an intimate turn as Sunny opened up about her recent loss while discussing the importance of heart care.
A Heartfelt Tribute to Heart Health
Star Jones joined the panel as a national volunteer for the American Heart Association, bringing her own story of triumph over heart disease to the forefront. On Wednesday, February 5, the "View" crew came together to kick off American Heart Month with an informative and heartfelt discussion.
“I had open-heart surgery 14 years ago, and I’m proud to say I’m not just surviving—I’m thriving,” Star, 63, revealed, noting that the late creator of "The View," Barbara Walters, also underwent open-heart surgery. “My life has improved dramatically since then, and I’m living proof that it’s possible to overcome these challenges.”

Small Changes, Big Impact
Star passionately advocated for adopting healthier lifestyle choices to prevent heart-related issues. “It’s no secret: eating better, exercising regularly, and making healthier choices can make a world of difference,” she explained. Star admitted she used to be the “laziest person on the planet,” but after her surgery, she realized she had no choice but to change. “Now, I’m out there working hard because my health depends on it, and so does yours.”
Star urged everyone to take charge of their heart health by staying informed. “Know your numbers—your blood pressure, your cholesterol levels, and your blood sugar. These are key indicators of your heart health,” she advised. “And don’t forget to get regular check-ups, like an EKG. Most insurance plans cover these tests now as part of preventive care.”

Breaking Down Barriers
Star also emphasized the importance of quitting smoking, calling it “one of the most dangerous and costly habits out there.” Stress management, she explained, is another critical factor in maintaining heart health. “Sleep is underrated. Getting enough rest is essential in reducing the risk of cardiovascular issues,” she added.
As the conversation unfolded, moderator Whoopi Goldberg noticed an unusual silence in her earpiece. That’s when Sunny, visibly emotional, revealed the passing of her aunt just a day earlier. “I’m so sorry, my aunt passed away yesterday from a heart attack,” Sunny tearfully shared. Her cohost, Alyssa Farah Griffin, quickly offered her condolences. “Oh, I didn’t know that,” Star said, comforting Sunny, who asked Alyssa to take over her segment as she continued to cry.
Alyssa then introduced a clip from Star’s show, Divorce Court. Star discussed how her program stands out by featuring real people dealing with genuine issues. “What happens when someone shares a personal loss, like Sunny did, is that I empathize with them,” Star told Sunny after the clip aired. “It’s my job to let people know they’re not alone in their struggles and that there’s always hope for a better tomorrow.”
Star jokingly remarked that it was one of the strangest transitions she’s ever made on TV but then delivered a heartfelt message to Sunny. “Remember, your aunt is now at peace with God, and we’re here to honor her legacy,” Star said, offering comfort.

Sunny wiped away her tears and apologized to the audience. “Do not apologize,” Star replied warmly. “We’re your girls, and you’re supposed to be vulnerable with us. That’s what sisterhood is all about.” The audience erupted in applause, showing their support for Sunny during this difficult time.
