Let me tell you a story about Erin Murphy, the actress who played the adorable Tabitha on the classic sitcom Bewitched. Last summer, Erin decided to share a few episodes of the show with her grandchildren. "I was the same age as my granddaughter, Stella Erin, when I first appeared on the show," she exclusively tells Closer in a heartfelt conversation. "And you know what? They absolutely loved it!"

Back in 1964, America fell head over heels for Bewitched, a show about a beautiful witch named Samantha who marries a mortal advertising man, Darrin Stephens. Together, they try to lead a normal life in the quaint town of Westport, Connecticut. Erin and her twin sister, Diane, initially shared the role of Tabitha, Samantha and Darrin’s daughter, who made her debut in 1966. "The whole experience was just so much fun," Erin reminisces. "I always enjoyed the episodes where there were other kids or animals involved—they just added an extra layer of excitement!"

As Erin grew up, she eventually took over the role of Tabitha full-time. She formed a close bond with the adult cast, especially Elizabeth Montgomery, the legendary actress who portrayed Samantha. "Elizabeth was like a second mom to me," Erin shares fondly. "She'd even scold me like a parent would. If I was acting silly, she'd call me 'Erin Margaret'—just like my real mom did!"

Erin also cherished the time she spent in hair and makeup with Elizabeth and Agnes Moorehead, who played the quirky witch Endora. "It was during those moments that I truly understood the magic of makeup," she recalls. "Elizabeth was already a stunning woman, but with her makeup on, she seemed like a goddess to me. And Agnes—with her vibrant blue eyeshadow and bold colors—she was absolutely breathtaking!"

There have been whispers over the years that Agnes, a four-time Oscar nominee best known for her iconic role in Citizen Kane, wasn't happy during her time on the show. "That's simply not true," Erin insists. "Agnes was like a grandmother to me. She had such a deep affection for Elizabeth that she even left her jewelry to her in her will."

Dick York, who played Darrin until he left the show in 1969 due to health issues, was another parental figure in Erin's life. "He used to read me stories," Erin remembers with a smile. She also worked well with his successor, Dick Sargent. "There was definitely a different vibe with Dick Sargent. His Darrin seemed a bit more intense, but I have nothing but positive memories of both of them."

How ‘Bewitched’ Created Television Magic

The enchanting world of Bewitched captivated audiences, but Erin reveals that even as a child, she knew the magic was all an illusion. In a time before computer-generated effects, the show relied on old-school tricks to bring its spells to life. "There were people up in the rafters using fishing poles and wires to make things float," she explains. "They'd spray the wires with something to make them invisible on camera."

When an actor had to magically appear or disappear from a scene, the entire cast would freeze in place. "You had to stand absolutely still while that person entered or exited," Erin recalls. "It was quite a process, but I always thought of it as a fun game."

These days, Erin occasionally receives acting offers, but she doesn't prioritize it. "My life is fantastic. I have a wonderful family," she says with a warm smile. "People still adore the show, and playing Tabitha has only brought positive things into my life."
