Oliver Hudson didn’t hold back when he shared his candid thoughts about growing up in an unconventional household as the son of Hollywood legend Goldie Hawn. In a heartfelt conversation, the actor discussed the complexities of his childhood and the lessons he's learned along the way.

On the popular podcast “Sibling Revelry,” Oliver, best known for his role in Rules of Engagement, revealed that he took a course at the Hoffman Institute. The course focuses on unpacking the patterns we inherit from our parents and stepparents, helping individuals break free from negative cycles and build healthier lives.

During the podcast episode, which aired on March 18, Oliver explained the concept of "negative love." He talked about how, as children, we often attach ourselves to any form of love—even if it's not healthy—just to survive. The course helped him understand these patterns and gave him tools to overcome them. "It was all about understanding those patterns and learning how to break through them, building a toolbox for life," Oliver said.

Oliver Reflects on His Relationship with Goldie Hawn

Now 47, Oliver turned the conversation toward his mom, Goldie Hawn, and how she shaped his childhood. He also touched on his sister, Kate Hudson, and the unique dynamic they shared growing up. Goldie welcomed Oliver and Kate with her ex-husband, Bill Hudson.

"Interestingly enough, my mom was the one I had the most trauma with because she was my primary caregiver," Oliver confessed to guest Bode Miller. "I was with her all the time, and while she was an amazing mother, there were times when I felt unprotected. She had new boyfriends I didn’t like, and she was living her life. As a child, I needed her to be there for me, and sometimes she just wasn’t," he added.

Oliver went on to explain that his perception as a child was shaped by the absence of a father figure in his life. "Even though my dad wasn’t around, my mom stepped up in her own way. She came through for me more than I realized at the time," he reflected.

Despite the challenges of his upbringing, Oliver and Goldie now share a strong bond. Goldie is a doting grandmother to Oliver's children, Wilder, Bodhi, and Rio. The Academy Award-winning actress has openly discussed her journey as a parent, acknowledging her own mistakes and growth over the years.

"We do the best we can as mothers," Goldie told People in October 2018. "Certainly, as a mother, I’ve made mistakes. We all do, we all will. But the most important thing is to stay authentic and true to yourself and hope that you show by example, not by what you say but by what you do," she shared.

Goldie's Expanding Family

In addition to Oliver and Kate, 44, Goldie is also a mom to son Wyatt Russell, whom she shares with her longtime partner, Kurt Russell. Kurt, 73, is also a father to son Boston Russell from his marriage to Season Hubley, which lasted from 1979 to 1983. Despite the complexities of blended families, Goldie and Kurt have built a loving and supportive household for their children and grandchildren.
