HGTV stars Drew and Jonathan Scott have captivated audiences with their charming personalities and home renovation expertise. But behind the scenes, there's another Scott sibling who has been part of their journey—J.D. Scott, their older brother. While Drew and Jonathan have taken center stage, J.D. has quietly played a significant role in their shows. However, his path hasn't been without challenges. Battling an illness while contributing to the Property Brothers' empire, J.D. has shown resilience and humor. Let’s dive into his story and find out what happened to him and where he is now.
Who Is J.D. Scott?
J.D. Scott, whose full name is James Daniel, is the eldest of the Scott siblings, born in 1976, two years before his twin brothers, Drew and Jonathan. Growing up in Canada, the Scott brothers were no strangers to the entertainment world. As teens, both Drew and J.D. dreamed of pursuing acting careers, while Jonathan set his sights on becoming a professional magician. However, life had other plans for these talented siblings.
During their college years, Drew and Jonathan discovered a passion for real estate, flipping homes and eventually turning it into a full-time career in the early 2000s. Their big break came in 2011 when their show, Property Brothers, debuted on HGTV. The show quickly became a hit, spawning multiple spin-offs like Brother vs. Brother, Property Brothers at Home, and Buying and Selling. Amidst all this, J.D. stepped in to lend his expertise and comedic flair to the family business.

J.D.'s contributions to the Property Brothers' shows have been invaluable. With his hands-on approach and quick wit, he often assists with projects and provides comic relief on set. He has even hosted behind-the-scenes segments for Brother vs. Brother, acting as a referee when tensions between his brothers flare up. In 2019, J.D.'s own home was renovated during an episode of Property Brothers: Forever Home. After seeing the final result, J.D. was visibly moved, saying, "I'm starting to tear up. It doesn't seem like the same place. It seems like we wandered into someone else’s house." Despite his seemingly carefree demeanor on camera, J.D. was quietly battling serious health issues.
J.D.'s Health Battle
While J.D. appeared cheerful and energetic on screen, his personal life was anything but smooth. In July 2019, he revealed that he had been fighting an illness for over a year. The symptoms were baffling—his skin would feel like it was on fire in warm temperatures, causing him to pass out and leave him incapacitated for days. Despite countless doctor visits, scans, and tests, the cause of his illness remained a mystery.
In an Instagram video, J.D. explained his health struggles to his followers, saying, "Anything over 69 to 70 degrees, I would suddenly feel like my skin is on fire, I’d start passing out and I’d be out of commission for sometimes days." He continued, "There was a pretty severe infection, and, of course, you don’t know how long that’s been there. But he said that it’s possible it’s been there for quite a while, that that would have been setting off all these responses." It was a tough time for J.D., but he didn't let it break his spirit.
Where Is J.D. Scott Now?
By September 2019, J.D. finally received some answers from his doctors. He announced on Instagram that he had been diagnosed with acute mercury poisoning. "My levels are so high the health department got involved," J.D. revealed to his fans. "We don’t know at this point how it happened, but I am being treated for it and that would explain some of the issues I’ve been having as well."
Despite the diagnosis, J.D. didn't let it slow him down. In October 2019, he married his wife, Annalee Belle, on Halloween. Just a few days after the wedding, J.D. shared an update on his condition with Hollywood Life, saying, "The last few days I feel almost back to normal, and it’s been amazing. It’s been so long since I felt good, and like myself. I’m really getting close." Since then, J.D. has continued to make appearances on Drew and Jonathan’s shows and shares hilarious skits on his Instagram page.
Now, J.D. is also a proud uncle to Drew’s son, Parker James, who was born to Drew and his wife, Linda Phan, in May 2022. J.D.'s journey is a testament to his resilience and determination. Whether he's renovating homes, cracking jokes, or facing health challenges, J.D. Scott continues to inspire those around him.
