From Lake Worth, Florida, to the world of daytime television, Days of Our Lives star Deidre Hall has carved out an incredible career that no one could have predicted. Growing up, Deidre never imagined herself as an actress. Her journey is a fascinating tale of serendipity and hard work.
“It was all so unexpected,” Deidre tells Closer in a candid conversation. “Back in college, I was all about psychology. I was on the path to becoming a therapist. But life has a way of surprising you. I ended up playing a therapist on TV, which is just plain funny when you think about it.”
From College Psychology to Hollywood Stardom
In 1979, Deidre stepped into the role of Dr. Marlena Evans on Days of Our Lives. She was a psychiatrist at the fictional University Hospital in Salem, Illinois. Over the past four decades, Marlena’s storylines have been nothing short of extraordinary. Possessed by the devil twice, mind-controlled into believing she was a serial killer, and kidnapped multiple times, Marlena’s journey has captivated audiences worldwide.

“The writers are always coming up with something new and exciting. It keeps me on my toes, and I can’t wait to see what they dream up next,” says Deidre, who is now 75 and still going strong.
Days of Our Lives and its spin-off Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem are now available exclusively on Peacock, where fans can stream their favorite episodes anytime.
Shaped by Her Childhood
When asked about how her childhood influenced her life, Deidre shared, “Growing up, we had a strong sense of family and fairness. My parents instilled in us values like integrity and hard work. We were five kids, and everyone had their responsibilities. That small-town living really shaped who I am today.”
How Acting Found Deidre Hall
Deidre’s path to acting was anything but traditional. “I started out on the radio to make ends meet and got into modeling. One summer, I came out to California, and an agent suggested I try commercials and acting. I didn’t think much of it, but it turned out to be life-changing.”
Turning Down Marlena
Believe it or not, Deidre initially turned down the role of Marlena. “When my agent called to say I got the part, I thought it was a mistake. I told him, ‘They must have all turned it down before me.’ Turns out, they wanted me from the start. It was a humbling moment.”
Favorite Storylines and Guest Stars
When it comes to her favorite storylines, Deidre fondly remembers working with her twin sister, Andrea. “She joined the show to play Samantha and later Hattie. There was this scene where she burst into tears on the stand during a sanity hearing. Watching her cry like that was incredible. It made me realize how much I had inspired her over the years. Having her there was such a joy.”

Embracing Change with Peacock
Deidre is enthusiastic about the show’s move to Peacock. “For us, it’s not a huge change. We still do the same job in the same place with the same amazing people. But for the audience, it’s a big shift. I’m here to support them through it. The beauty of streaming is flexibility. You can watch whenever it suits you. Whether it’s 6 a.m. or midnight, we’re there for you. And being the first daytime show to go streaming? That’s something we’re all proud of.”
Why Daytime TV is Special

A Spectacular Life

Teaching Empathy to Her Sons
Deidre is proud of the values she instilled in her sons. “They’re incredibly generous and empathetic. They’re always thinking of others and showing compassion.”
Staying Youthful
Deidre’s beauty secrets? “I spend an hour on the treadmill every day. And I can’t stress enough the importance of staying out of the sun and never going to bed with makeup on. Simple things can make a big difference.”
Exploring New Projects
While Deidre isn’t planning any major projects, she loves experimenting in her garden. “I grow everything I can. Even if something doesn’t work out, I find a way to use it. Gardening is my passion.”
Proud of Longevity

No Retirement Plans
When asked about retirement, Deidre jokes, “I’ll retire when the gate key stops working. Until then, I’m here for the ride.”
