Jaime Camil: The Man Behind The Mask And The Motorcycle

Jaime Camil has always been one to grab life by the handlebars. Recently, he unveiled his new Triumph motorcycle at the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, a charity event raising funds and awareness for Movember—a global men's health movement. This isn't just any ride; Movember has supported over 1,250 men's health projects worldwide, including prostate cancer research and mental health initiatives focused on first responders and military veterans in the U.S. For Jaime, it's not just about the ride but the cause behind it.

“Men’s mental health is a serious issue,” Jaime shared with Closer. “You know how we men are—we don’t express our feelings, we don’t cry, and we rarely ask for help. We’re conditioned to ‘man up’ and toughen through everything. That’s why Movember is so important—it challenges us to rethink those outdated beliefs.”

From Business to Broadway: Jaime Camil's Journey

So, did you always dream of becoming an actor?

  • “Not at all. My father was a highly successful businessman in Mexico, and my mother was an artist and singer who performed alongside legendary Brazilian musicians like Sérgio Mendes. I inherited my artistic flair from her, but my dad always hoped I'd follow in his footsteps. For years, I felt caught between two worlds—business and the arts. But deep down, I knew where my heart truly belonged.”

How did your father react when you told him you wanted to pursue acting?

“It was one of those moments that changed everything. I was 18 when I finally gathered the courage to tell him. I thought he might freak out, maybe even think I was going to announce I got someone pregnant! But when I told him I wanted to act, his response was surprisingly calm. He wasn’t thrilled, but he gave me his love and emotional support. That’s all a kid could ask for.”

Life on Stage: Jaime's Love for Musical Theater

You’ve been part of both seasons of the musical comedy Schmigadoon!. What do you love most about working on that show?

“Oh, everything! Being on stage is my happy place. Schmigadoon! combines the magic of theater with the brilliance of television. Working alongside incredibly talented performers like Jane Krakowski, Kristin Chenoweth, Ann Harada, and Alan Cumming feels like being part of a dream cast. The writing is sharp, the songs are unforgettable, and the camaraderie among us makes it unforgettable.”

  • “Not at all. The beauty of Schmigadoon! is the genuine kindness and humility everyone brings to the set. There’s no ego here, no competition, just a group of generous, talented individuals creating something magical together. It’s a testament to what happens when people come together with open hearts.”

Behind the Scenes: Jaime's Thoughts on TV vs. Theater

Do you prefer musical theater to film or television?

“Absolutely. There’s nothing quite like the live energy of a theater audience. I’ve been eagerly waiting for Coco to make its way to the stage, and I’d do anything—offer a kidney, an arm, you name it—to play Ernesto de la Cruz. That would be a dream come true.”

Fans adore you from Jane the Virgin. What made that experience so special?

“Like Schmigadoon!, Jane the Virgin was a lovefest. It’s rare to find a work environment where everyone is so committed to excellence, kindness, and collaboration. The writers were incredible—every word on the page was gold. That’s why I stand behind the WGA strike. Without strong writing, there’s no show. Period.”

Is there any truth to rumors of a Jane the Virgin revival?

“I’ve heard Jennie Snyder Urman mention the idea of a limited series set 10 years after the original ended. If it happens, it would be a blast to reunite with the cast. There’s nothing quite like coming back together after all these years.”

Life Beyond Acting: Family and Values

How would you describe your current phase of life?

“I’m incredibly happy. I love my family, especially my kids. Work keeps me busy, but I try to stay present and mindful. Life is uncertain, and the past is unchangeable. All we can do is focus on living each day with integrity and purpose.”

What’s the secret to your 10-year marriage to Heidi Balvanera?

“We’ve actually been together for 17 years. The secret? Tolerance and empathy. It’s about seeing things from each other’s perspective and working through challenges as a team. And yes, sometimes it helps to say ‘Yes, honey!’”

Do you see your children following in your footsteps?

“Elena, my 11-year-old, is tall, beautiful, and sings like an angel. My son Jaime, who’s 8, has a knack for humor and impeccable timing. Whether they choose acting or another path, I’ll support them fully. My hope is that they make thoughtful decisions based on the values they’ve learned at home.”
