When "This Is Us" wrapped up its six-season journey in 2022, fans bid farewell to the Pearson family. But for Chrissy Metz, who portrayed the beloved character Kate, the connection remains strong. "Every character you play becomes a part of you," Chrissy, now 42, shares with Closer. "You grow so close that the lines between who you are and who they are blur. It's like they're an extension of yourself."
Since the show's conclusion, Chrissy has kept herself incredibly busy. Earlier this year, she released her children's book and album, When I Talk to God, I Talk About You, which has been warmly received. Adding to her accomplishments, she delivered a powerful performance as a prescription drug-addicted mother in the independent film Stay Awake. Chrissy emphasizes the importance of addressing such issues, saying, "We need to talk about these things openly. When the fear of discussing them fades, healing and empathy can take its place."
Favorite Memories from 'This Is Us'
When asked about her favorite moments from the show, Chrissy lights up with nostalgia. "I adored any scene involving weddings, whether it was Kate's or the flashbacks. I have a soft spot for wedding montages and episodes," she recalls. "There were so many unforgettable scenes! Watching Jack, played by Blake Stadnik, grow into a successful artist after Rebecca's journey as a singer was especially touching. It felt like a full-circle moment, and it resonated deeply with me."

Music: Her First Love
"Music has always held a special place in my heart," Chrissy shares when discussing her passion for singing. "From a young age, I dreamed of being a singer, even though my interests initially leaned toward marine biology and therapy. By the time I reached middle school, I realized music was my true calling, and I've been pursuing it ever since."
Supportive Roots
Chrissy reflects on her upbringing, acknowledging the challenges her family faced. "Growing up, my family wasn't financially well-off. After my parents' divorce, my mom became a single parent, doing everything she could to provide for us. While she may not have been able to offer much materially, her emotional support was unwavering. She encouraged me to chase my dreams, no matter what they were."
Being a Role Model
Becoming a star and a role model through her work on "This Is Us" came as a surprise to Chrissy. "I often think of myself as a work in progress, figuring things out as I go. I believe that's something we all do. If people see me as a role model because they relate to me and recognize that I'm just like them, then that's truly an honor."
Tackling Addiction in 'Stay Awake'
In Stay Awake, Chrissy takes on the challenging role of a drug-addicted mother, Michelle. "Meeting the director was an instant connection; he felt like family. The film is inspired by his and his brother's real-life experiences," she explains. "It was crucial to portray Michelle without judgment. Addiction is something I've witnessed firsthand, whether through friends or my own struggles with food. I want people to know they're not alone and that there's hope for recovery."
Wine and Philanthropy
Chrissy has also ventured into the world of wine with her own label, Joyful Heart. "Wine used to seem so pretentious to me, but as I learned more about it, I fell in love with the process. It's been an incredible journey," she says. "The name Joyful Heart reflects my approach to life. When you bring a bottle of wine to a dinner or a friend's house, you're sharing joy and connection. Plus, $1 from each bottle supports World Central Kitchen, which is incredibly meaningful to me."
Children's Book and Music
Chrissy's creative endeavors extend to her children's book and music project, When I Talk to God, I Talk About You, created with her boyfriend, Bradley Collins. "My experience teaching preschool inspired this project. The kids loved singing and hearing stories, so creating a book and album felt like a natural next step," she explains. "The songs aim to nurture young minds with encouragement, self-esteem, and unconditional love. As my grandmother used to say, 'Singing is like praying twice.'"

Favorite Song on the Album
Among the tracks on the album, Chrissy holds a special place for "Learning to Be Brave." "Life teaches us that courage isn't something you're born with; it's something you cultivate," she reflects. "No matter your age, we're all still learning to be brave, and that's a beautiful part of the human experience."
Spirituality and Gratitude
Spirituality plays a significant role in Chrissy's life. "It's my anchor, guiding my thoughts, decisions, and actions. It's essential to who I am," she says. "Starting each day with a gratitude list helps me stay grounded and positive. I write down at least ten things I'm thankful for before checking my phone. It sets the tone for the day."
Home in LA
Living in Los Angeles has its perks for Chrissy. "My dog is my favorite part of my home here," she laughs. "Owning a home is a miracle I never took for granted. Coming from humble beginnings, it's incredible to have achieved this. Every day, I'm reminded of how far I've come."
Staying Healthy
Chrissy prioritizes her well-being through various activities. "Swimming and weightlifting make me feel strong and capable," she says. "I also take vitamins and herbal supplements to support my health. Gratitude plays a huge role in my routine, helping me maintain a positive mindset."
Bucket List Dreams
Looking ahead, Chrissy has ambitious plans. "I'd love to perform on Broadway, write and direct a film, and eventually start my own production company," she shares. "Traveling more is also on my list. There's so much more I want to explore and experience."
