It’s been just a week since the series finale of Good Bones aired on HGTV, and Mina Starsiak Hawk has already dived into reflecting on her time on set with her mom, Karen E. Laine. In a candid episode of her podcast, "Mina AF," released on Tuesday, October 24, she sat down with co-star MJ Coyle to talk about the end of the beloved series and the dynamics between the cast. The conversation was raw, heartfelt, and, at times, surprisingly humorous.

A Candid Conversation About the Show's End

During one part of the episode, Mina read a fan question aloud, asking MJ what it was really like working with her and Karen. MJ didn’t hold back, delivering an honest and insightful response. "We’re obviously very different," he began, setting the tone for the rest of the conversation.

MJ went on to explain that his relationship with Mina was "a little bit more predictable on a day-to-day basis." He emphasized that this wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but rather a reflection of their differing personalities. Mina, known for being a "control freak" with a "need for immediacy," admitted that she tends to change her mind "every 12 seconds." She joked that working with her can be "a lot," but it’s part of what makes her successful in the home improvement world.

Two Very Different Relationships

When it came to MJ's relationship with Karen, he painted a vivid picture of the challenges they faced. "When it comes to your mom, it’s like she really wants people to understand things that are completely... well, let’s just say they’re not always straightforward," he explained. MJ highlighted Karen’s creativity and talent but noted that getting on the same page with her could sometimes feel like an impossible task.

Mina laughed in agreement, adding, "Yeah, and if you do get on the same page, it can be kind of... wackadoo." She referenced co-star Cory Miller, saying, "Cory got on that ride, and I don’t think he ever got off with all of their projects." The comment drew laughter from both Mina and MJ, highlighting the quirky nature of the team dynamic.

The Final Season's Tensions

The podcast episode also touched on the strained relationships during the filming of the final season. Mina revealed that she and Karen weren’t on "good terms" at one point, though she didn’t go into detail about their current status. Both Mina and MJ agreed that the energy on set shifted dramatically during the last season, with the small team no longer enjoying each other’s company.

"Our small team, at that point, we weren’t even enjoying each other’s company," MJ admitted, echoing Mina’s sentiments. "Everyone was just very burnt out." The stress of working long hours and the emotional toll of wrapping up such a successful show clearly took its toll on the cast.

Despite the challenges, the final season appeared harmonious thanks to strategic editing. Mina confessed that "there were very few days where there wasn’t something going on that didn’t get edited out." She noted that some cast members were too similar in personality, leading to clashes, while others had polar opposite approaches, creating a unique dynamic.
