HGTV’s beloved Erin Napier and her family are paying tribute to the late music icon Jimmy Buffett, who passed away on September 1. Erin, the star of Home Town, and her husband Ben Napier, decided to take their daughters Helen and Mae on a memorable journey to Orange Beach, Alabama. This destination held a special place in Buffett's heart and was a significant part of his life.

In an emotional Instagram post on September 10, Erin shared a video from their trip, captioning it with heartfelt words. “Jimmy Buffett died, and I needed to go back to the place where my parents had a home in Orange Beach,” she wrote. “They sold it the month before Mae was born, so she never experienced the beach like her sister did as a baby. We were lucky to find a last-minute unit available next door to the one where I spent my summers.”

The video captured the joy of Erin's daughters, Helen, 5, and Mae, 2, as they strolled along the shore with their dad close by. Erin, 38, played Buffett's iconic song "Tin Cup Chalice" in the background, creating a deeply personal and nostalgic moment. The trip wasn't just a vacation; it was a way for Erin to connect her daughters with the Gulf Coast's rich history and its significance to her family.

  • Erin continued in her caption, “We were so fortunate to grow up jumping into Ole River and riding boats with tangled salty hair out to the islands. I wanted my girls to hear songs about the Gulf, to feel the sand beneath their toes, and to understand how much this place meant to our family. Sometimes, you can't go back, but you can rent for the weekend and make new memories.”

    Remembering Jimmy Buffett's Legacy

Jimmy Buffett's battle with Merkel cell carcinoma lasted four long years before tragically taking his life at the age of 76. Born in Mississippi, Buffett had a lifelong connection to the Gulf Coast, where he spent much of his childhood. Even after achieving fame in the rock genre, he always returned to perform in the region that inspired so much of his music.

As Buffett’s website poignantly notes, “For young Jimmy, the Gulf of Mexico was the gateway to a world of adventure. The characters he heard about in his grandfather’s stories were waiting to be discovered. The allure of exotic ports contrasted with his days as a parochial school student and an altar boy. But all it took was a guitar to set him on a different path from the life his parents imagined for him.”

    Jimmy Buffett's Gulf Coast Roots

Many fans of Jimmy Buffett admired his unwavering connection to his hometown and his commitment to staying true to his roots. Erin and Ben Napier are just two of the many who found inspiration in Buffett’s love for the Gulf Coast. “Jimmy’s Gulf Coast roots are a big part of his success,” his youngest sister, Lucy Buffett, once told AL.com in 2012. “Growing up around water creates a deep longing to be out on the water. So many of his songs reflect his love for exploring the ocean, a passion born during his youth on Mobile Bay, Dauphin Island, Gulf Shores, and the Mississippi barrier islands.”
