John Stamos Talks About a Pivotal Moment in His Life
In a candid conversation with People, John Stamos, the beloved actor best known for his role on Full House, shared a deeply personal chapter of his life. The 60-year-old revealed how he faced one of the most challenging periods of his life, including his battle with alcohol addiction. "I had to sober up. I was just drinking too much," John candidly admitted. "I wasn’t living my best life. I was staying low, avoiding challenges, and surrounding myself with the wrong crowd. It was time for a change."
The Turning Point: A DUI That Changed Everything
John’s journey to sobriety began after an incident in 2015 when he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Beverly Hills. This event served as a wake-up call for the actor, leading to a pivotal decision to turn his life around. "I had that DUI, and I was like, 'I can’t do this anymore. I’ve got to get my act together,'" he explained. "I was confusing the universe. I’m not a bad person, but I was doing things that weren’t aligning with who I truly am."
The Road to Recovery
After pleading no contest to the DUI charge, John was sentenced to three years of probation. This marked the beginning of his recovery journey, which included entering rehab—a period he described as "dark" but ultimately transformative. "It was a tough time, but it started to get better," John recalled. He leaned heavily on his family, particularly his sisters, and found immense support from his Fuller House costars during this challenging period.

"I had so much waiting for me, and I feel incredibly fortunate because many people don’t have that second chance. They’ve burned their lives down," John reflected. "But luckily, I had my sisters and the incredible opportunity to return to Fuller House. I got home, and just a week later, we started filming the show. It was like a fresh start for me."
Life After Sobriety
Today, John Stamos is grateful for the support of his wife, Caitlin McHugh, and their son, Billy, who help keep him on track. "They’ve been instrumental in keeping me on this path," John said. "Staying sober isn’t easy. Everyone tries it at some point. You might go a while without drinking, but then you think, 'I can drink again.' It’s about staying committed and focused on the path."
Delving Into His Past: John’s Upcoming Memoir
John is set to release his debut memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, on October 24. In the book, the California native shares intimate details about overcoming addiction, his childhood, and his divorce from his first wife, Rebecca Romijn. "My first marriage was incredibly difficult," John revealed. "It shattered me for far too long. A year of healing is understandable, but it went on for years. I had to rebuild myself from the ground up."
