After capturing the hearts of millions on HGTV's "Good Bones," Mina Starsiak Hawk decided to share an incredibly personal and challenging chapter of her life with her devoted fans. The beloved home design star bravely revealed the emotional rollercoaster of her fertility journey, including the tough news from a doctor who said her chances of conceiving a second child through IVF were less than 1 percent.
Mina and Steve Hawk Open Up About Their Struggles on the "Sex After" Podcast
Mina, now 39, and her husband, Steve Hawk, joined the "Sex After" podcast hosted by the insightful Amy Marcs on January 26. They shared their experiences about the challenges they faced when they decided to expand their family. At the time, they were already proud parents to their son Jack, but their initial round of IVF treatments failed, leaving them heartbroken and uncertain about their future as a growing family.
Doctors' Advice: Don’t Give Up Hope
During their visit to the fertility clinic, the couple was advised by their doctor to consider using a donor egg or explore adoption if they wanted to add to their family. This was a tough pill to swallow for Mina and Steve, who were both deeply invested in the dream of expanding their family. The news left them overwhelmed and emotional.

“We were filming this,” Mina recalled, her voice filled with emotion. “Steve and I were obviously crying in the moment. We had driven separately and had to go to different places afterward, so I got in my car and just lost it. I was processing so many things—not just that my body wasn’t working but also the house I had built, the floor plan designed around multiple children.”
Steve, who was equally heartbroken, added, “When your heart is set on something and you’re told you’re not going to get that, it’s absolutely devastating. It’s like losing a piece of yourself.”
A New Chapter: The Arrival of Baby Charlotte
Despite the odds, Mina announced in March 2020 that she was pregnant with her second child through intrauterine insemination. The couple was overjoyed, but the news came as a surprise even to them.
“When I told Steve I was pregnant with Jack, he just started crying. When I told him this time, it was shock,” Mina shared with People at the time.

In September 2020, Mina and Steve welcomed their precious daughter, Charlotte, into the world. The couple couldn’t have been more thrilled with their growing family.
“She’s here! And she’s perfect! We are just obsessed with our little family and can’t wait for Jack to be the best big brother to sweet Charlie,” Mina and Steve announced in a statement to People.

Today, the HGTV dream team is living their best life with their two beautiful children, Jack, who’s now 5, and Charlie, who’s 3, in their stunning Indianapolis home. Life has come full circle for the couple, who never lost hope in the face of adversity.
“I could not love this tiny human more,” Mina captioned a video of her daughter on Instagram in December 2023. “Every ounce of sass is going to be so worth dealing with when she’s an adult, kicking ass and takin’ names. She’s just magical.”
