Recently, she spoke about the joys and challenges of motherhood, revealing how becoming a mom has influenced her career trajectory. With her signature honesty, Lily admitted that while her children bring her immense happiness, they’ve also shifted her focus away from the spotlight.

In a heartfelt interview on the “Radio Times Podcast” on Tuesday, March 12, the multi-talented singer-songwriter opened up about her journey as a parent. “I absolutely adore my kids, and they’ve brought so much meaning into my life,” she said. “But let’s face it, in terms of maintaining that pop stardom, having kids has definitely changed things for me.”

Lily shares two wonderful children, Ethel Mary and Marnie Rose, with her ex-husband Sam Cooper, whom she was married to from 2011 to 2018. Now, she’s happily married to Stranger Things star David Harbour, tying the knot in 2020. Despite her personal changes, Lily remains deeply committed to her role as a mother.

Challenging the "Having It All" Myth

Throughout her interview, Lily didn’t shy away from addressing the unrealistic expectations placed on working mothers. “It really bothers me when people say you can have it all because, honestly, that’s not true,” she confessed. “There are sacrifices involved, and for me, those sacrifices meant stepping back from my career to give my kids the attention they deserve.”

Lily acknowledged that every parent makes different choices. “Some people decide to prioritize their careers over their children, and that’s perfectly fine,” she explained. “But growing up, I experienced what it’s like to have parents who were absent. Those experiences left scars that I refuse to pass on to my own children.”

A New Chapter: Launching "Miss Me?"

Despite the challenges, Lily remains optimistic about her future. In fact, she’s set to launch a new podcast titled “Miss Me?” later this week. This project reflects her ability to balance her personal life with her professional passions.

Reflecting on her decision to step back from the limelight after welcoming her children, Lily expressed no regrets. “Choosing to focus on my kids was the right decision for me,” she said. “Looking at them now, I’m proud of the well-rounded individuals they’ve become. Fingers crossed, of course.”

Previously, Lily has been open about her experiences as a mother and how they’ve affected her career. During an interview with France’s NRJ Radio in February 2014, she joked about her decision to return to music. “Why did I come back? Was it because I ran out of money? Nah, just kidding!” she laughed. “I thought being a stay-at-home mom would make me super happy, but turns out, two babies who can’t even talk yet? That got pretty dull after a while.”

Writing Music with a New Perspective

As a mother, Lily approaches her creative process differently. “When I write songs now, I’m mindful that my kids will eventually hear them,” she shared. “I can’t go overboard with sexy or gross lyrics anymore—it’d be embarrassing for them. But don’t worry, my music still has the same energy and spirit; it’s just evolved alongside me.”
