Hey there, friends! If you’ve been a fan of HGTV’s Home Town, you know Erin Napier isn’t just an incredible designer—she’s also a powerhouse of resilience. Over the years, Erin has faced some pretty serious health challenges that most of us can’t even imagine. But guess what? She faced them head-on with that signature smile we all know and love. Today, we’re diving deep into Erin Napier’s health journey, from her perforated appendix to her throat surgery and how these experiences have impacted her mental well-being. So, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s get into it!
Erin Napier’s Battle with a Perforated Appendix
Let’s rewind to a time when Erin Napier was dealing with some mysterious symptoms that had doctors scratching their heads. Most people know when their appendix bursts because it’s excruciatingly painful, but Erin’s situation was different. The HGTV star experienced stomach pain that would come and go, knocking her off her feet for days at a time.
In an October 2018 interview with People, Erin opened up about her ordeal. “In the beginning, it would be 24 hours of terrible stomach pain and a low-grade fever, and then it would disappear,” she explained. “It became two days, then three.”

Despite multiple CT scans and tests, doctors couldn’t pinpoint the cause of her pain. It wasn’t until 2014, when Erin’s OB/GYN suggested exploratory surgery, that the truth came to light. Erin was suffering from a perforated appendix, which had been bursting and healing itself over the years. This left her with significant scar tissue that bonded her organs together and posed a threat to her fertility.
“The first time it happened, when I was 19, it just partially ruptured,” Erin recalled. “Not enough to kill me, just enough to make me sick.” Thankfully, doctors successfully removed her appendix, resolving her stomach issues. Even better, her fertility remained unaffected, and Erin went on to welcome two beautiful daughters with her husband, Ben Napier.
Why Did Erin Napier Have Throat Surgery?
Unfortunately, Erin’s health challenges didn’t stop with her appendix. In May 2022, she shared on Instagram that she had been hospitalized for throat surgery. Erin’s caption revealed how much she cherished the support of loved ones during this tough time. “Staying tonight in the hospital after a throat procedure, and feeling so cared for by an old friend… I’ve never been so happy to see him as I was tonight, expecting a bowl of chicken noodle soup but getting a needed visit with an old friend too,” she wrote.

Erin didn’t reveal the reason behind the surgery right away, but almost a year later, in January 2023, she shared the details. “I was hospitalized with an abscessed tonsil during this block, so this episode and several others are about to have me with a weird voice and super puffy faced from IV steroids,” she wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
How Have Erin Napier’s Health Scares Affected Her Mental Health?
Erin and Ben Napier have faced numerous health scares over the years, and Erin has admitted that these experiences have left her with a lingering fear of illness. “I spend an inordinate amount of my time avoiding illness. I scan Facebook each morning, looking for who’s sick so I can avoid them for the next 10 days,” Erin confessed on her blog in 2012.
She went on to explain that her fear isn’t just about catching a cold—it’s about avoiding more serious illnesses like the flu or stomach viruses. “It’s a mental problem, really, my fear of getting sick. I’m not talking about a cold, but the flu, the stomach virus… We’ve been together for 8 years and neither of us has ever had the flu in that time… This sounds incredibly stupid — there are people out there with far worse ailments and diseases than the common flu, but it’s hugely frightening to me.”
